While Yang Qianrou was desperately trying to hail a taxi, the Qin family and Jiang Rui’s car had already arrived at the hospital one after another. The driver stayed in the car to wait, while the bodyguards accompanied them inside.

The paternity test wasn’t urgent. Qin Wenze first took Jiang Duoduo for a physical checkup. Only after confirming she was fine did they prepare to do the test.

However, when they inquired at the hospital, they found out that the department didn’t handle such tests; they needed to go to a specialized testing center.

Qin Wenze turned to Jiang Cheng and said, “How about we skip it today? All this back and forth is tiring for the child.”

Jiang Duoduo, resting in his arms, was indeed already drowsy, her head drooping onto Qin Wenze’s shoulder, even forming a little snot bubble as she slept.

But Jiang Cheng, unusually resolute, refused Qin Wenze’s suggestion to delay. “Since we’ve decided, let’s just get it done all at once. There’s no need to drag it out. It’s just a trip to the testing center, it’s not late yet. We can still make it now. Besides, Duoduo is asleep; she won’t even know what’s going on, and then we can go home.”

At that moment, Yang Qianrou, who had just arrived at the hospital, overheard this and quickly chimed in, “Right, right! It’s even more convenient while the child is asleep!”

Qin Wenze frowned and glanced at her. “Why did you follow us here? Didn’t I tell you to go back first?”

Half-asleep, Jiang Duoduo heard the voices and thoughts swirling in Qin Wenze’s mind: [Does this woman have nothing better to do? When we get back, I’ll have a serious talk with Mom. We can’t let that Yang woman keep running up bills for the Qin family. She should find a proper job so she’s not so idle, always meddling in others’ affairs!]

Obviously, Qin Wenze was muttering to himself again.

But to the others, unaware of the cold but loquacious man inside, it seemed like he was just worried about Yang Qianrou getting tired and wanted her to rest at home.

At least, that’s what Yang Qianrou thought—and she even beautified the previous threats in her mind, imagining Qin Wenze told her to go home so she wouldn’t have to worry about the Jiang family’s inquiry, that he would take care of everything.

Feeling reassured, Yang Qianrou lifted her hand to smooth her hair and strike a charming, alluring pose—only to remember she was still holding the broken heel of her shoe.

She quickly lowered her hand and softly said, “Brother Wenze, I’m fine. Don’t worry.”

Qin Wenze looked at her with a baffled expression, too tired to converse further.

He didn’t understand why this person always seemed not to grasp what he said, responding with nonsensical answers but wearing an expression that suggested she understood everything. He had no idea what she actually understood.

Sure enough, she must spend less time idle and more time trying a 996 work schedule; that would probably straighten out her speech, leaving no energy for nonsense.

Qin Wenze didn’t want to deal with Yang Qianrou, but Jiang Cheng misunderstood because of his behavior and Yang Qianrou’s deliberately intimate and shy demeanor.

She was the type to swallow every hardship silently, bottling up her discomfort instead of speaking out.

After Madame Qin made inquiries and returned with Jiang Rui, they encountered this very scene.

Qin Wenze secretly glanced at the sleeping, drooling Jiang Duoduo; Yang Qianrou blushed and stole glances at Qin Wenze; Jiang Cheng looked down, lost in thought, avoiding everyone’s gaze.

Seeing them return, Jiang Cheng quickly asked, “What’s the situation? Did you find the place?”

Jiang Rui nodded. “Yes, there’s one nearby. We can go now and get the results the same day.”

Jiang Cheng breathed a sigh of relief. “Great, let’s go right away!”

She led the way to leave, but unexpectedly bumped into someone as she turned around.

The person staggered back two steps before steadying themselves by leaning on a table.

Jiang Cheng hurried forward to help and apologized, “Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention…”

“Ah? Jiang Cheng!” The person she bumped into suddenly recognized her and called her name, “It’s you, isn’t it? After your car accident and discharge, why haven’t you come back for a follow-up? How’s your health?”

It was a doctor in a white coat.

After speaking, the doctor noticed Qin Wenze approaching, holding Jiang Duoduo in his arms, and immediately misunderstood their relationship.

The enthusiastic doctor laughed and said, “Jiang Cheng, is this your husband and child? See, I told you before—although the miscarriage caused by that accident made pregnancy difficult afterward, it’s not hopeless.

Look, the child is so big now!”

The doctor was genuinely happy to see his patient recovering well. He wasn’t particularly respectful toward Qin Wenze either and even spoke directly to him, “Young man, you’ve learned to cherish your wife now, even helping to hold the child.

Your wife nearly lost her life; when she called you, you didn’t answer. Fortunately…”

“Doctor Li!” Jiang Cheng interrupted firmly, “There’s no need to say more. I’m grateful you saved my life back then. The rest… let’s not bring it up.”

The doctor finally sensed something was off from Jiang Cheng’s expression. As a doctor, he didn’t want to interfere too much in personal matters and immediately stopped, lowering his voice to quickly tell Qin Wenze:

“Did you make your wife angry? Come on, young man, you have to soften up with your wife! She was in the emergency room, and you didn’t even come or turn on your phone.

No wonder she resents you so much.

You owe her.”

Then he waved at Jiang Cheng, “Jiang Cheng, my department is busy, so I won’t keep you. If you need anything, come for your checkups. You still haven’t completed the follow-ups.”

As the doctor was about to leave, Qin Wenze grabbed the sleeve of his coat, asking, “Do you remember when Jiang Cheng’s accident happened?”

Jiang Duoduo had been awakened by the noise and rubbed her eyes, looking at Qin Wenze and then at the middle-aged doctor, who was half bald.

The doctor quickly gave a date and quietly explained to Qin Wenze, “That was the day before my wedding anniversary with my wife. I remember it clearly.

Young man, take good care of your wife.

And remember, career is important, but you have to spend time with those around you. How can you not even visit your wife after her accident?”

With that, he slipped away.

Qin Wenze turned to look at Jiang Cheng.

His memory was sharp.

At that time of year, he should have been on a business trip out of town negotiating a major project.

After finishing, he returned more than a month later, only to receive Jiang Cheng’s divorce papers without any warning or explanation. She had already disappeared with her luggage.

Qin Wenze should have immediately asked her for an explanation.

But when he saw Jiang Cheng’s reddened eyes, the words at the tip of his tongue mysteriously turned into—

“Let’s go. Weren’t we heading to the testing center?”
