Chapter Fifty: Grandpa Said, Tong is Clever, Just Like Him

Upon hearing this, Jiang Dalin thought it was pure nonsense. They were all educated youths; how could they not be counted together?
“Xia Xia, you can’t just think all educated youths are bad people!” Jiang Dalin shuddered at the thought of the little girl viewing the entire group of educated youths as villains—every day squatting at the entrance of their settlement, pounding each one unconscious with a tiny fist as they came out, then neatly lining them up at the gate. Hastily, he earnestly advised, “There are good people among the educated youths too!”
With Liu Jinhua’s mind eased, she now had time to ponder other matters.
Hearing Jiang Dalin’s words, she rolled her eyes and said, “Don’t talk nonsense. Look around this room—are there any good people here? In my opinion, there isn’t a single decent one!”
Jiang Dalin was so infuriated he nearly fell backward. Just as he was about to scold Liu Jinhua, Jiang Hua beckoned to Jiang Xiaxia and said, “Xiaxia, tell Grandma, what do you think makes them the same?”
Obediently, Jiang Xiaxia pointed with her finger at the two men, “The smell!”
They smelled the same!
Wang Lianjun and Jiang Dalin exchanged confused glances as they looked at the two educated youths lying on the ground. Jiang Hua appeared thoughtful, as if suddenly comprehending something.
Seeing this, Liu Jinhua rushed forward, blocking the two men’s view, and then lifted Qiu Youyou’s collar to take a look. After examining, she glanced meaningfully at the two men and clicked her tongue in disdain.
No wonder the little girl said these two were the same—they had slept with each other, so their scents were inevitably mixed!
Even Wang Lianjun and Jiang Dalin, who hadn’t initially caught on, understood what was going on when they saw Liu Jinhua’s actions.
Wang Lianjun glanced toward the distant tree and quickly withdrew his gaze.
Jiang Dalin felt a sharp ache in his molars—did this little girl truly understand something, or was it just a lucky guess?
Jiang Hua stood up, dusted off his clothes, held the little girl’s hand, and said to Jiang Dalin, “This girl has a keen nose. Women usually apply face cream or something, and since Comrade Li had contact with her, the scent naturally clings. The more contact, the more obvious the scent, so Xiaxia could smell it.”
Jiang Xiaxia scratched the small tuft of yellow hair on her head, tilted her head thoughtfully, and said, “Grandma is right!”
Jiang Dalin breathed a sigh of relief at Aunt Jiang Hua’s perfect explanation.
Liu Jinhua sneered, “Team leader! When you manage us, you’re so decisive and competent. Why can’t you properly manage these educated youth kids?”
Jiang Dalin gave a dry laugh. How could he manage them? If they could just work the fields without owing any public points by year’s end and survive the next year, that was enough to be grateful for—what was there to manage?
These educated youths were like fighting roosters when not working the land; once they did, they were as useless as chickens with the plague.
This place was a poor and remote backwater; beyond two mountains lay the border with the Russians.
He feared that if these combative educated youths were provoked too much, they’d run amok and cross into Russian territory—that would be a big disaster.
So as long as they worked the fields quietly, they could cause as much trouble inside as they liked—it was like the village had no other entertainment, just watching a show.
Who would have thought today would erupt into such a scene?

“I’ll find someone to tie up these two first!” Jiang Dalin said with a headache. “Auntie and this comrade in the military, please help take another look.”
Rubbing his head, he then walked away.
Just as he stepped outside, he saw Jiang Zhuguo strolling over and couldn’t help but complain, “Uncle, why didn’t you come earlier?”
If he had come earlier, Jiang Dalin wouldn’t have had to face all this alone.
Jiang Zhuguo glanced at him and said, “I’m not here for you! I’m here to fetch my wife home for dinner!”
“...” Jiang Dalin: Didn’t Iron Egg go to call you?
“He did!” Jiang Zhuguo kept walking forward. “He went to call me, but I never planned on coming!”
A man showing up to a women’s fight—what’s the point?
Jiang Dalin felt heartbroken and wanted to cry.
Flushed red-faced, he couldn’t help but snort loudly in front of his uncle who had raised him, then turned and stormed away.
Jiang Zhuguo clicked his tongue, full of disdain. “Already a father, yet still acting like a spoiled child—how shameful!”
Hearing the criticism, Jiang Dalin’s expression darkened further.
Why did he become team leader in the first place?
Oh, because Jiang Yi, the eldest of Uncle Zhuguo’s family, said that being team leader was like washing the old lady’s foot binding cloth every day—disgusting and mandatory—so he ran away.
Then, through a lottery between brothers, he carelessly drew the short straw.
Jiang Dalin sighed heavily. It must have been his childhood mischief—when he mistakenly ate offerings placed at his father’s grave, which were meant for ancestors more than three generations back, bringing on this misfortune.
Sighing at every step, Jiang Dalin rushed back to the village to find people and a cart.
Meanwhile, Jiang Zhuguo frowned at the empty educated youth courtyard and asked, “Where is everyone?”
Liu Jinhua exclaimed, “That Dalin really isn’t bright. He got so worked up about chasing the educated youths, he forgot all about those kids here!”
Jiang Xiaxia, however, pointed to one side, “They’re back!”
Liu Jinhua looked but saw nothing.
Still, after seeing how the little girl mysteriously found the hidden military comrade and then, with her keen nose, discovered the improper relationship between Qiu Youyou and the slow-witted male youth, Liu Jinhua immediately believed her.
Sensing something was amiss, Jiang Zhuguo looked at Liu Jinhua and said, “Your two older ones are sitting at the door, scared to go in after being scolded by Third Sister. Go check on them!”
“That cursed little girl!”
Liu Jinhua’s face twisted with rage as she stormed home.
After they left, Wang Lianjun looked at Jiang Zhuguo and said, “Uncle, I’ll go to the town and find the military!”
Upon hearing “find the military,” Jiang Zhuguo’s expression grew serious.
After Jiang Hua quickly explained the situation, Jiang Zhuguo nodded. “Go home and ask the third child to get the bicycle from the cellar and ride there quickly! This can’t wait!”
Wang Lianjun acknowledged and dashed into the village.
Once everyone was gone, Jiang Zhuguo looked at his wife and said, “That story doesn’t hold water!”
If not for Xiaxia mentioning the improper relationship between the female and male educated youths, they would have just sent her to the military, who would then transfer her to the Education Committee.
Now, sending her over with the claim that she had an improper relationship with a male youth and was trying to hook up with a soldier would allow the military to investigate thoroughly!
Jiang Hua admitted her reasoning was somewhat far-fetched. “But I looked into that girl’s eyes—it didn’t seem like a teenager’s. My intuition tells me there’s something wrong with her.”
“Grandma’s right!” Jiang Xiaxia saw Jiang Zhuguo’s thoughtful expression after hearing her grandmother’s words and immediately spoke up loudly, clearly siding with Jiang Hua.
Jiang Zhuguo chuckled, “I never said your grandma was wrong! Everything she says is right!”
Jiang Xiaxia then showed her small milk teeth in a smile.
After a moment, she asked, “Why don’t they dare go inside?”
Jiang Zhuguo sighed when she asked about the neighbors. “Although Grandma Jinhua has stopped favoring boys over girls, she’s now favoring girls over boys. Third Sister isn’t grateful and takes favoritism for granted. Combined with Grandma Jinhua’s bias, it’s caused disharmony among the younger siblings.”
Favoritism? Tongzi didn’t want Grandma to become like Grandma Jinhua.
To keep Grandma from worrying, Tongzi had to get along well with his older siblings. To do that, he had to be fair and not show favoritism.
Being fair meant that what one brother got, the sister should also get; what the sister wanted, the brother should be given as well.
Feeling like she understood, Jiang Xiaxia nodded firmly, “Got it!”
Jiang Zhuguo doubted what such a little girl could truly understand, but seeing her obedient nod, his heart softened and he praised, “My granddaughter is really smart!”
But little did he know, this praise and approval would almost bring disaster upon the entire county.
