Chapter 60: The Muzzle Aimed at the System
Koizumi Gusan’s screech startled Lanzi into peeking through the doorway. Seeing the man curled up on the ground, clutching a certain sensitive area and groaning in agony, she immediately spat on the floor. "Serves you right, you damned Jap! May your bloodline be cut off!"
As she spoke, hearing a commotion behind her, she saw Xia Lin using his tiny body to shield the two unconscious young boys.
With a complex look in her eyes, Lanzi stared at him for a long moment before finally pushing the door open.
With a swift bound, she lunged toward Jiang Xiaxia. Seeing the little girl happily picking up money with a beaming smile, Lanzi didn't even stop to think—she bent down and reached out, intending to scoop the child up and run.
The other children in the room definitely couldn't be sold now, but this one right here already had a deposit paid on her; she couldn't afford to lose her.
"What are you doing?"
Sensing someone trying to interrupt her money-gathering, Jiang Xiaxia gave a little hop with her small legs, neatly dodging those hands while shooting a chilling glare at the woman.
The look practically screamed that if Lanzi dared to interfere again, she would smash her head in.
Lanzi was so exasperated she laughed. "What an absolute idiot!"
Jiang Xiaxia had no time to argue about being called a fool. Once she scooped up all the large-denomination bills from the ground and safely tucked them into her pockets, she happily rubbed her little hands together again.
She clearly remembered the data stored in her system: humans sometimes took on part-time jobs, and the wages for such jobs were usually settled on the same day.
Today, she had successfully led her uncle to find human traffickers and rescued two little big brothers, one of whom even came from a military compound. Did this count as a part-time job?
Granted, this little big brother didn't recognize Tantuan and couldn't help her retrieve her deserved reward, making him a bit useless. But judging by that Jap's reaction just now, this little big brother must have an extraordinary background, right?
From this perspective, had her part-time job's KPI (Key Performance Indicator) been over-fulfilled today? Since it was over-fulfilled, there naturally had to be a bonus.
So weren't the large bills she picked up today essentially her daily wage plus a bonus? That way, she wouldn't have to hand the money over to anyone.
Having found a logical origin and purpose for this windfall, Jiang Xiaxia leisurely raised her head. Her gaze first landed on Lanzi, then shifted to Koizumi Gusan, who was lying nearby, looking too weak to even howl anymore.
Tilting her head slightly, her dark, glossy eyes fixed on Lanzi, she asked in a crisp, clear voice, "Why'd you throw me away?"
Lanzi let out a cold snort. "You're a money-losing piece of trash, and a fool to boot..."
Halfway through her sentence, Lanzi felt foolish herself. What was the use of saying so much to a little idiot? The child wouldn't understand anyway.
Actually, she didn't even know what she was thinking. After all, she hadn't planned on saving that little boy in the first place.
She was inherently selfish. If she could survive and live well on her own, why bother caring about others?
Yet when she actually saw the Jap pointing a gun at that little boy, her instinct had been to throw the little idiot out to block the Jap's line of sight while she scooped up the boy and retreated.
The bloodline of soldiers who protected the country could not be trampled upon by those Japs.
A silly little girl naturally couldn't compare to a boy from the military compound.
Besides, being able to save a boy from the military compound was also this little idiot's blessing.
"Hurry up and come with Mother!"
Seeing that the Jap over there had stopped moving and looked as though he had passed out, Lanzi didn't dare step forward to check on him. Instead, she said coldly to Jiang Xiaxia, "If you don't listen to Mother, Mother really won't want you anymore!"
Jiang Xiaxia gave her a look of utter disdain. "Do you take me for a real fool?"
If it weren't for that golden lock, who would be willing to tag along with a dawdling human trafficker who was so stingy with candy?
Now that her daily wage was in hand, the candies for her older brothers and sisters had been secured, and she had run into the little big brother and Uncle Xiaming inside, who would still be willing to play along with her act?
That would cost extra!
"Idiot!" Facing Lanzi's distorted expression, Jiang Xiaxia uttered those two words in a crisp voice that was enough to make someone vomit blood from frustration.
Furious, Lanzi was just about to retort when the front door was violently shoved open.
"What are you two doing?"
The man entering the room had a broad, flat face, accented by a pair of triangular, cross-eyed eyes.
The moment Jiang Xiaxia turned her head to look at that face, she suddenly trotted over on her little feet to the room where Lanzi had been hiding, poked her head inside to take a peek at the tense-looking Xia Lin, and then withdrew her gaze.
Good grief, how could anyone be born looking so ugly!
She needed to quickly look at the handsome little big brother to cleanse her eyes.
Lanzi paid no attention to Jiang Xiaxia's actions. The fool was still within her line of sight; what harm could she possibly cause?
However, the moment she saw who had entered, her entire body instantly tensed up with anxiety, and the words slipped out before she could stop them: "Tu Ji, why are you here right now? Didn't we agree to make the trade tonight?"
"Some brothers caught wind that the troops are mobilizing urgently, while the police station remains dead silent. I figured something big is going down, so I rushed right over. Let's wrap this up so we can get out of here fast!"
Tu Ji was the code name of the grave robber who intended to buy Jiang Xiaxia this time.
Stepping into the courtyard, he glanced down at the man sprawled on the ground, furrowed his brow, and asked, "What happened to him?"
"That little fool was acting up in the courtyard just now and accidentally kicked him right in the jewels! He's just recovering his senses now. Pay him no mind!"
In truth, Lanzi wasn't very familiar with this grave robber named Tu Ji; the one she actually knew well was the fellow lying on the ground.
Therefore, facing Tu Ji at this moment, her gaze was filled with wariness, and she had no desire to let him check on the Jap's condition.
"Aren't you here to buy this girl? Take her and go!" Lanzi said, pointing a finger at Jiang Xiaxia, who was standing to the side with her back to them.
Tu Ji frowned, displeasure written all over his face. "Why is she still awake?"
"She's just a fool, what does it matter if she's awake or not? Do you want her or not?" Lanzi was anxious and annoyed, her heart hammering wildly in her chest. "If you don't want her, I'll refund your money! This little idiot is strong; we can sell her to some remote mountain village to do farm work, or even make her a child bride!"
Seeing Lanzi's eager-to-be-rid-of-her attitude, a strange feeling welled up in Tu Ji's chest. He took several steps back, scanned the courtyard, and suddenly spoke up, "Since you have other buyers, sell her to someone else! Besides, our boss's only goal is to exact revenge on that soldier anyway!"
With that, he turned and made to leave.
But the moment he lifted his foot, Koizumi Gusan, who had been lying on the ground, abruptly sprang up, flinging something from his hand.
Lanzi watched in horror as a red dot instantly appeared between Tu Ji's brows, and the man collapsed straight down, lifeless.
Having dealt with Tu Ji, Koizumi Gusan swiftly flicked his wrist, training the pitch-black muzzle of his gun directly at Lanzi, who had collapsed to the ground in terror.
Just when Lanzi thought her life was about to end right there, Koizumi Gusan's gun barrel shifted without warning, aiming straight at the back of Jiang Xiaxia, who stood just behind her.
"Bang!" A deafening gunshot suddenly shattered the air.
