Chapter 3: The Agreement Takes Effect—Your Chance Is Gone

Jiang Ruxue was dressed neatly and had applied full makeup. As she stepped out of the villa, Lu Fan was standing by the roadside.
With one hand in his pocket, his tall figure stood beneath the ginkgo tree. The wind stirred the yellowing leaves, making them dance, and he appeared utterly forlorn.
The moment he glanced back, Jiang Ruxue found him incredibly handsome.
Most of the time they spent together, he kept his head lowered.
He cooked meals, washed her feet, gave massages, and tidied up the rooms.
Despite his tall stature, he never looked down on her with condescension.
In front of Jiang Ruxue, he was always humble.
Only now did Jiang Ruxue realize that the husband she never took a fancy to had features far more refined and profound than Shen Qianye’s; it was just that Lu Fan never bothered to dress up, which made people overlook his appearance.
The rear car door had already been opened, and he was as considerate as ever.
Knowing she found him shabby, even when sharing the same car, Jiang Ruxue never sat with him.
In her eyes, he was merely a servant, a driver.
Lu Fan drove steadily toward the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Jiang Ruxue noticed that the usually talkative man, who would frequently ask if she was cold or thirsty, remained silent the entire way.
When he didn’t speak, only silence remained between them.
She pinched the divorce agreement and spoke coldly, “Think carefully. Once this agreement takes effect, there will be no chance to make any demands.”
Lu Fan held the steering wheel with one hand and said calmly, “Yes, I only want Xiaoyou.”
Jiang Ruxue stared hard at the back of his head, wishing she could pierce through it, but Lu Fan stopped the car. “We’ve arrived at the Civil Affairs Bureau.”
He gallantly opened the door for Jiang Ruxue, who stared at the bureau just within reach, suddenly realizing he was serious this time.
“Lu Fan, this is your last chance. If there’s anything you want, I can…”
“No, let’s go. It should be less crowded now.”
Jiang Ruxue looked at his profile and suddenly recalled the day they got their marriage certificate.
He had said, “Ruxue, let me take care of you from now on.”
He had not broken his word; over these years, he had indeed done his utmost to care for her.
Back then, the Jiang family was on the brink of bankruptcy. If they truly went under, she would be worse off than an ordinary person, burdened with huge debts.

Shen Qianye “happened” to go abroad, forcing Jiang Ruxue to marry Lu Fan. Lu Fan never cared about her family background.
He had said the marriage had nothing to do with her family; he simply wanted to treat her well.
Jiang Ruxue had despised him for five whole years. She thought this moment would be joyful—she was finally free.
Yet the Civil Affairs Bureau was right before her eyes, and her feet seemed glued to the ground.
Just then, Lu Fan answered a call. “Don’t rush, take your time. Okay, I’m coming right away.”
After hanging up, Lu Fan hurriedly said, “Ruxue, I have urgent matters to attend to. We’ll handle the paperwork another day.”
Jiang Ruxue sneered, “Lu Fan, don’t think I don’t know you’re making excuses. We’re already at the door; filling out a form won’t take long.”
“I promise to divorce tomorrow. I really have an emergency now!” Lu Fan, usually so mild-mannered, didn’t explain further and hurriedly hailed a taxi and left.
Jiang Ruxue watched his hurried figure depart, a mocking smile curling on her lips.
She had actually thought Lu Fan would be decisive about the divorce, but he was as cowardly as ever.
A good-for-nothing who would never rise to prominence.
Jiang Ruxue received a call from Shen Qianye, “Xue’er, the tumor specialist I found has arrived. Hurry over. If Third Master is cured, our two families will be allied. With Third Master backing us, we can dominate Haishi City!”
This time Shen Qianye had returned to China, and the two families planned to unite against the dominant Lin family.
The three families were all eyeing Third Master Qin, who had retired from Beijing to Haishi City.
Securing the Qin family as an ally meant wielding power in Haishi City, elevating the Jiang family’s status.
The Bentley pulled up outside a villa. Before getting closer, Lu Fan was seen stepping out of a taxi behind.
Jiang Ruxue immediately flared up in anger and shame. “You agreed to divorce, didn’t you? Why are you following me again? Lu Fan, you’re disgusting!”
Lu Fan hadn’t expected to run into her here. “Ruxue, you misunderstand. I’m not following you; I have business at the Qin family.”
A strange male voice came from nearby, “Xue’er, is this your pathetic ex-husband?”
Shen Qianye, dressed in a suit, stepped down from the luxury car. Judging by his demeanor, it was no wonder Jiang Ruxue had pined for him for five years.
But no matter how good the appearance or the fortune, without manners, one was no better than a wild beast.
Seeing Lu Fan, Jiang Ruxue felt ashamed and quickly distanced herself. “I’m done with him. Lu Fan, you see for yourself—you can’t even compare to a finger of Qianye. You could never afford a car like this washing dishes your whole life. Recognize your place and stop wasting time on me.”
Lu Fan frowned but didn’t have time to argue. “Ruxue, don’t worry. I won’t trouble you again. I’m here to see Third Master Qin.”
These words drew Shen Qianye’s ridicule, “If you’re going to lie, at least make it believable. With your cowardly looks, not even as a security guard at the Qin family would you be hired. Get lost, or I won’t be polite!”

Jiang Ruxue glared fiercely at Lu Fan. To her, he was nothing but a cowardly househusband.
They had been married five years, and because she felt ashamed of him, she never appeared with him in public.
She impatiently urged, “Enough, Lu Fan. I don’t care what you’re here for; this isn’t a place for you. Leave quickly, or you’ll be thrown out and embarrassed.”
Lu Fan wanted to rush forward to explain, “This is a matter of life and death, I—”
“What? I think you’re just a toad lusting after a swan! Even if your family has no mirrors, you should have some self-awareness. Security, kick this toad out now!”
The Qin family’s security immediately blocked Lu Fan and brusquely ordered him away, “Get lost, don’t cause trouble here!”
Jiang Ruxue glanced back at the man being driven away by the guards.
Luckily, no one knew he was her husband, or the Jiang family’s reputation would be utterly ruined.
Lu Fan was helpless. He was a naturally gifted genius.
He learned quickly but was born with a defect in his martial spirit, unable to practice martial arts.
His master once said that if he found his destined other half, with yin and yang in harmony, his spirit vein would gradually awaken.
At twenty, he went down the mountain searching for the little girl who had saved him before. Five years ago, he had been intimate with Jiang Ruxue.
Although it was only one night, his spirit vein should have reacted.
But his spirit vein remained as still as a stagnant pool.
Lu Fan had suspected that Jiang Ruxue was not the little girl from before, but he remembered clearly that the girl had said she was the Jiang family’s daughter, and her face was an exact match for Jiang Ruxue’s.
There were no other daughters in the Jiang family. Lu Fan didn’t know where the problem lay.
Now, he had no chance of winning a direct confrontation with a first-level martial artist and could only be stopped outside the gate.
Lu Fan dialed Lin Ziyu’s number. The security guard nearby scoffed, “What, calling for backup? You don’t even have one watch worth as much as mine. The people you’re calling probably are beggars, right? Ha…”
Before the guard finished mocking, hurried footsteps in heels approached.
“I’ll f***ing stomp you!”
Then a woman delivered a flying kick that sent the guard flying ten meters, crashing into a car across the way, before falling heavily and coughing up blood.
