Chapter 50: Weeping and Begging, Don't Leave Me, I Regret It
Jiang Ruxue wished she could turn back time and undo her actions.
She finally understood why the Qin family had treated Lu Fan with such high respect, even going so far as to deploy a honey trap.
What if Lu Fan was not ordinary at all, but a miraculous physician with peerless medical skills?
Jiang Ruxue had already come to believe this. In the past, her physical constitution had been extremely poor. Ever since she gave birth, Lu Fan had started brewing herbal medicine for her to soak her feet in. In all these years, she had barely even caught a common cold.
The faint scent of herbs about Lu Fan was not the fragrance of any perfume. If he had not spent his entire life dealing with medicinal herbs since childhood, how could such a fragrance have permeated his very being?
Moreover, Third Master Qin’s illness was a living example. Even the expert physicians summoned from the capital had been utterly helpless, yet with just a single medicinal pill and a few acupuncture needles from Lu Fan, Third Master Qin’s condition had improved visibly before their very eyes.
If this wasn't a divine healer, what was?
Jiang Ruxue felt as though she were on the verge of fainting. Clearly, all the credit rightfully belonged to the Jiang family, yet she had listened to the nonsense of her family and Shen Qianye, pushing her own husband away and handing him over to others.
In the end, Shen Qianye turned out to be nothing more than a playboy. Leaving aside Zhao Bingbing, his private life abroad was utterly scandalous.
She was merely an insignificant passerby in Shen Qianye's life, whereas Lu Fan had held her in the palm of his hand, using his own unique way, for a full five years.
For the sake of that scoundrel Shen Qianye, she had thrown away a genuine treasure.
With a trembling voice, Jiang Ruxue asked, "Lu Fan, who on earth is he?"
Lin Ziyu crossed her arms, casting a haughty and cold glance at Jiang Ruxue. "You all in the Jiang family considered Lu Fan a good-for-nothing and looked down on him. In truth, he is someone you could never hope to match, someone far out of your league!"
"Let me put it this way: leave aside my Lin family, even the Qin family would be considered beneath him."
Hearing this, Jiang Ruxue's face turned completely pale; she simply dared not imagine it.
"A miraculous physician of Lu Fan's caliber—even the mentors of those authoritative experts you invited would have to address him respectfully as Master."
"Well now, Miss Jiang, do you finally realize what kind of formidable figure my junior martial brother is? If he wanted women, thousands would come at the crook of his finger. I’ve even been itching to personally step in and pick one for him."
Jiang Ruxue felt a sharp pang in her heart, but she wasn't entirely foolish. "You and I are supposed to be adversaries. Why are you telling me all this? Aren't you afraid I'll snatch Lu Fan back?"
"Then you truly don't understand my junior martial brother's character. He is as stubborn as an ox. Once he decides to do something, ten horses couldn't drag him back. Otherwise, he wouldn't have worked himself to the bone as a beast of burden in your Jiang family for five years without a single word of complaint."
Lin Ziyu smiled triumphantly. "The moment he signed the divorce agreement, it meant he had prepared himself to sever this marriage completely. Besides, you were never his destined match."
Jiang Ruxue abruptly turned her gaze to Lin Ziyu. "What do you mean?"
"Nothing much. As an outsider, it isn't my place to say too much. If you want to know, go ask him yourself."
Jiang Ruxue’s mind flashed back to Lu Fan’s words that it wasn't love. Panicked, she grabbed Lin Ziyu’s hand. "Make yourself clear! If I am not his destined match, could it be the Qin family's young lady instead?"
"Who knows? I'm not the Matchmaker of the Moon tying the red threads of fate. Even if you ask me, I have no way of telling you. The only thing I can tell you is that after divorcing you, he will go and seek out his true destined partner."
Lin Ziyu pried her fingers loose. "So, Miss Jiang, you'd better face reality sooner rather than later. There is no longer any possibility between you and Lu Fan."
This sentence was practically Lin Ziyu delivering a direct death sentence to Jiang Ruxue.
"Where is Lu Fan?"
"Resting in my guest suite. Use these last twenty days to bid him a proper farewell. Once some people are missed, it's for a lifetime."
When she said this, there was no mockery or sarcasm on Lin Ziyu's face; instead, there was a sense of world-weary desolation, like someone who had been through it all.
She slowly stood up and left, leaving the time and space to Jiang Ruxue.
Because she had already seen in Jiang Ruxue's eyes a deep care for Lu Fan, though unfortunately, her love had arrived far too late.
Jiang Ruxue entered the room and saw the man lying quietly on the bed.
His complexion was deathly pale. The man who hadn't even caught a common cold in five whole years had been reduced to this state.
Jiang Ruxue sat down beside him, covering her face with her hands. Yet, tears still managed to slip through her fingers, splashing onto Lu Fan's face.
She murmured repeatedly, "I'm sorry, Lu Fan, I'm sorry."
Lu Fan slowly opened his eyes and saw Jiang Ruxue, her shoulders thin and trembling.
With great effort, he forced out the words, "Don't... don't cry."
Hearing his weak voice, Jiang Ruxue abruptly threw herself forward, wrapping her arms around Lu Fan's neck as scorching tears fell onto his shoulders.
"Lu Fan, don't leave me! Please, I regret it. I truly regret it..."
