Chapter 6: Defeated and Retreating
After returning, Xiao Ru found himself unable to sleep through the night. He had intended to go out for a walk to clear his mind but unknowingly ended up at the Western Garden.
Two years ago, when he had just returned from his travels, he vaguely heard the family servants mention that this place was once where his foster parents’ adopted daughter lived. Qiang Mei had said this land was too far from the main residence, so she rarely came here.
Yet, how could he remember the way to the Western Garden’s woodshed so clearly? It was as if he had been here countless times before.
This doubt troubled him for hours.
Could it be that he was being deceived by Xiao Yi?
With this question heavy on his mind, Xiao Ru went to find Xiao Yi, only to catch her shamelessly and recklessly intimate with Xiao Qi.
Xiao Qi had accompanied him on his travels. Though still young and not yet able to assume human form, he was obedient, responding precisely to commands.
So how did he end up entangled with Xiao Yi?
It must have been Xiao Yi’s shameless seduction.
Xiao Ru strode directly to the woodshed door and gave a sidelong glance at Xiao Qi, who was lying on the ground, frozen in place.
“Xiao Qi? Didn’t expect you to have such nerve!”
He unlocked the door and pushed it open with a loud bang, startling both Xiao Qi and Xiao Yi.
Xiao Ru’s fierce approach promised a restless night.
Xiao Qi knew well that the young master was furious tonight and that Xiao Yi might not withstand his anger. Gritting his teeth, he made a decision.
Just as Xiao Ru stepped inside, Xiao Qi bit his ankle.
“Master, she’s hurt,” Xiao Qi said after a moment, looking up at Xiao Ru’s dark, imposing gaze. Under the pressure, he weakly released his bite. “Please don’t act rashly.”
“Xiao Qi, how many years have you been with me?” Xiao Ru stopped, twirling the jade finger ring on his thumb.
Lowering his head, Xiao Qi replied gloomily, “Eight years, Master.”
“You know the consequences of disobeying me, don’t you?”
Xiao Ru’s eyes darkened as he scrutinized Xiao Qi, who trembled but stayed firm at the door. Anger flared in Xiao Ru’s chest, and he kicked out sharply.
Xiao Qi flew back, landing in the snow, blood trickling from his mouth as he let out two plaintive cries.
Seeing this, Xiao Yi could not stand idly by. She was about to rush over to check on him but was pushed back by Xiao Ru’s palm, falling backward to the ground.
After a long while, Xiao Qi struggled to his feet. “Thank you, Master, for sparing me. As for Xiao Yi…”
Xiao Ru turned, closing the door behind him, and said coldly, “Say one more word and you know the rules. Go accept your punishment. Don’t come back this month.”
***
After Xiao Qi left, only Xiao Ru and Xiao Yi remained in the Western Garden.
Inside the woodshed, the door shut, a sliver of moonlight slipped through the skylight.
In the darkness, Xiao Yi saw Xiao Ru’s figure slowly approach. Fear gripped her, and she shrank further into a corner.
Xiao Ru stood before her, appraising her for a long moment, still unable to understand what talents this foster daughter possessed.
In just a few days, she had first unsettled his heart, then enticed his subordinate to risk his life by disobeying orders.
“What other tricks haven’t you shown me yet?” Xiao Ru frowned, suspicion clouding his face. “Or is there something indecent hidden inside you that bewilders the heart?”
Xiao Yi was taken aback.
If she had such power, how could she have fallen to such a state?
Taking a deep breath, she said, “Xiao Ru, I don’t know what you mean.”
“Still denying it? From the time I fetched you at the border until now, do I need to list every trick you’ve played?”
His eyes burned like torches, as if he wanted to bore right through her.
Xiao Yi let out a light laugh, finding it all absurd. “When one wants to accuse, any excuse will do.”
As for scheming, Qiang Mei was the true master.
Meeting Xiao Ru’s gaze steadily, she said firmly, “I solemnly tell you, I did not do it, nor would I stoop to such things.”
But Xiao Ru did not believe her. Since meeting Xiao Yi, his mind and body had been unsettled, behaving abnormally.
Xiao Yi must be hiding something.
Yet on the surface, she was no different from any other white fox.
After a moment’s thought, he suddenly said to her, “Take off your clothes.”
If there was nothing on her, then she must be hiding something shameful beneath.
Xiao Yi was momentarily stunned at the demand.
What? Before she could respond, the impatient Xiao Ru had already pinned her to the ground.
“Xiao Ru, are you mad?” When Xiao Yi regained her senses, her collar had been pulled down halfway.
Her fragrant shoulder was exposed, skin as white as snow.
Xiao Ru’s eyes froze for a moment, and his hands involuntarily loosened their grip.
Xiao Yi’s face flushed slightly. She never imagined her brother could go this far.
The forceful suppression reminded her of the hardships she endured at the border.
Though small in strength, she refused to yield.
Using hands and feet, she bit as she struggled.
The two grappled half-naked for some time, faces flushed, breaths heavy.
In the end, after searching her entire body, Xiao Ru finally found “evidence.”
A beast’s tooth, threaded with a red string, was tied around Xiao Yi’s waist.
By the moonlight, Xiao Ru examined the tooth closely. It was clearly not a fox’s, but which beast it belonged to and its purpose remained unclear.
Clutching the tooth, he was about to demand an honest explanation when he saw her clutching her torn clothes to her chest, quietly sobbing.
The soft sensation of her hands lingered vividly in his mind. Realizing what he had done, Xiao Ru swallowed hard, his arrogance vanishing.
The beast tooth in his hand was not something to be trifled with.
Not worth delving into further.
Having gained nothing, he intended to leave, but hesitated just as he was about to lock the door.
Though beast people lacked the restraint of morality and shame, and though Xiao Yi was his foster sister, his impulsive actions were ultimately unjustified.
Xiao Yi’s crying lingered without endI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
