Chapter 6: Seizing the Opportunity
While waiting, Lin Pianran did not remain idle. She took a bow and arrows from her space and hunted some small animals nearby. Soon, she had bagged three gray rabbits and a pheasant, all of which were stored away in her space. She also captured a small, snow-white rabbit alive.
Once a living creature enters her space, it falls into a state of suspended animation; if it is not removed within a day, it will perish. Naturally, Lin Pianran did not put the little rabbit into the space but held it in her arms to play with. The little creature was adorable, soft, and fluffy, clearly born only a short time ago. When she fed it some spiritual spring water, its greedy, clumsy demeanor was incredibly endearing.
Lin Pianran had originally intended to find reinforcements to deal with the threat of the wolf pack, but after searching for a while, she could not find any patrolling Imperial Guards. This struck her as strange. If there were no Imperial Guards nearby, where had Lin Chuxuan emerged from to seize the opportunity to save the Eldest Princess? What was really going on here? It seemed this matter was far from as simple as it appeared on the surface.
Lin Pianran had chosen a spot with high terrain, sitting a full twenty to thirty meters above the ground, making it easy to observe the movements of the crowd below. Just as she was playing happily with the little white rabbit, she suddenly heard a chaotic commotion from below.
"Ah! Run! The wolves are coming!"
"What do I do? Someone save me! Ah... ah..."
"Waaaah... I’m never going hunting again! It’s so scary!"
"Mother... how I wish I could see you one more time..."
The wails and screams of the young men and women were like thunder, shaking the very earth. She leaned over to look down and saw the group in complete disarray and panic. Some young noblewomen were huddled together, crying and screaming, while others wanted to flee but were too terrified to move upon seeing so many ferocious wolves, leaving them helpless, shivering, and clutching their heads.
The crowd was surrounded by more than twenty wild wolves, each with eyes glowing with a sinister green light, staring greedily at them and slowly closing the circle. Wolves are both unified and vicious, and their speed is incredibly swift. Encountering such a pack was a primal terror for everyone, especially for the sheltered young ladies who had never witnessed such a horrifying scene. They were all trembling like leaves, their faces deathly pale. The guards of the various noble houses were bravely standing their ground against the wolves, the situation reaching a critical, hair-trigger state.
Lin Pianran took her bow and arrows from her space, ready to engage the wolves at any moment. She did not descend from the high ridge, instead standing tall like a guardian goddess of the mortal realm, her expression solemn, aiming at the wolf pack below, ready to save lives.
The number of guards was not insignificant; Lin Pianran counted them and estimated there were several dozen. As it stood, if the guards remained united, they would have a fighting chance against the wolves. Coupled with a few young nobles who possessed decent martial skills, while the battle was perilous, it might not result in catastrophic casualties. Lin Pianran kept a sharp eye on the wolf pack, paying particular attention to the Eldest Princess and Lin Chuyan within the crowd.
The leader of the pack was a black wolf with dark brown fur and cold, ghostly eyes.
"Awoo... awoo..."
Suddenly, after the wolf king let out a howl, it charged forward with lightning speed, initiating the attack. The other wolves responded to the call, surging fiercely into the crowd. The wolves and the guards clashed instantly. The wolves were cunning, weaving through the people with an intelligence and agility that was chilling to witness. The sounds of combat, wolf howls, and screams rang out to the heavens.
Whenever someone fell into peril and was about to be devoured, Lin Pianran would fire with precision to kill the wolf.
"First one, hit."
"Second one, hit."
"Third one, hit again."
Lin Pianran fired four arrows in succession, killing four wolves; she did not miss a single shot, striking vital points every time. She saved the Eldest Princess Huo Yaoshi once, as well as several other noblewomen. Even with the protection of the guards and Lin Pianran, two of the young ladies were bitten—one on the shoulder and one on the right arm. Both had large chunks of flesh torn away, their wounds bleeding profusely—a gruesome sight. Fortunately, both managed to escape the wolves' jaws.
When the wolves successfully attacked, they became even more excited, their assaults growing fiercer. Naturally, even more guards were injured; two were even surrounded and mauled to death on the spot. However, what surprised Lin Pianran was that the number of wolves continued to rise, with more emerging from the back of the pack in a constant stream. The situation spiraled into total chaos, with the shrill cries of the young women deafening.
Everywhere was a scene of frantic slaughter, and the scent of blood filled the air. The guards were the first line of defense, bearing the brunt of the attacks while also being distracted by the need to protect their masters. This caused them to become hesitant and overwhelmed, leading to a sharp rise in injuries and a rapid decline in their combat effectiveness.
Two men in black remained at the Eldest Princess Huo Yaoshi’s side, guarding her closely. Lin Pianran saw that their movements were exceptionally skilled, far superior to the average person, and guessed they must be imperial shadow guards. But there were only two of them, and they could not safely escort the princess out of the encirclement.
In desperation, Lin Pianran shouted down to them, "Everyone, come up here and take cover! Hurry up..."
"There are no wolves here; it’s very safe."
Many below heard her call and looked up, but the height was too great for the average person to scale. The two shadow guards beside the princess exchanged a glance. One of them bowed to the princess and said, "Your Highness, please forgive me!"
He then swept the Eldest Princess up, leaped into the air, used the branches of a tree for leverage, and after a few bounds, landed steadily beside Lin Pianran. The other guard picked up the princess’s personal maid, Chunxi, and followed behind, leaping up as well.
Lin Pianran’s eyes sparkled. She hadn't expected the imperial shadow guards to possess such superb light-body skills, flying up so easily while carrying others. It was enviable! They were truly masters! If she could master such skills, she could roam the world with ease. The thought alone was wonderful.
Lin Pianran offered a slight bow to Huo Yaoshi. "Lin Pianran, daughter of the Lin family, greets the Eldest Princess!"
"Thank you for your righteous rescue just now. No need for formalities!" Huo Yaoshi said with a smile, helping Lin Pianran up.
As they spoke, two more imperial shadow guards leaped up, each carrying a young woman. Lin Pianran looked closely and saw it was Princess Huai'an, Huo Yaoyu—the daughter of Consort De—and her maid. Princess Huai'an looked shell-shocked, taking a long moment to recover from the terror.
