Volume 1, Chapter 8: Catching Them in the Act
The girl blinked her large eyes, her expression dazed and naive, as if she were contemplating the streamer's words and wondering if her boyfriend was truly that kind of person.
She reflected on how, ever since she got together with that man, her luck had seemingly vanished. It started with her driving test; she was supposed to pass the third module, but she tripped and sprained her ankle on the day of the exam, rendering the attempt a failure. Then there was the job she had set her heart on; the manager had even called to confirm she had passed the assessment and was ready to start. Yet, the very next morning, she received another call from the manager saying the company was no longer hiring.
There were many more instances like these. The more the girl thought about it, the more she felt the streamer was right, and the more terrified she became. Damn it, this wasn't a boyfriend; he was a toxic blight, some kind of wretched, ruinous parasite. A man like that was garbage and should have been left long ago. With this latest incident on top of everything else, it was truly sickening.
"Streamer, has my good luck really been drained by my boyfriend—oh, no, I mean, by that scumbag?"
Jiang Rui smiled and said, "Even if I didn't say it, you already know the truth about what's been happening to you."
Jiang Rui glanced at the girl's physiognomy. She had originally been blessed with good fortune and health. During her university entrance exams, she had guessed blindly on many questions and somehow gotten them all right. It was because of that stroke of luck that she managed to get into a prestigious university. Sometimes, one really does need luck.
[Is she keeping such a man for the holidays? A guy like that belongs in hell.]
[One incident is a coincidence, but with this many, it’s clearly not.]
The girl glanced at the public chat and saw that many netizens were urging her to break up. Just as she was about to speak, she heard Jiang Rui say, "Wait, I haven't finished. How about I tell you another secret about your boyfriend?"
The girl was startled. "Streamer, what is it? Tell me quickly, thank you!"
The netizens, hearing there was more to the story, perked up and listened intently. Having been hit with so much today, the girl felt she wouldn't be surprised or devastated by whatever came next.
"About a kilometer from where you are, is there a hotel called Xilaisun?"
The girl was confused as to why the streamer had suddenly changed the subject to a hotel, but she nodded anyway. "Yes, streamer. What about it? What does the hotel have to do with this?"
She racked her brain, unable to figure out the connection. Jiang Rui gave a mysterious smile. "Go there now, and you'll catch a good show."
The girl was still puzzled, but the netizens in the chat, seasoned internet veterans, immediately understood.
[Holy crap! Are you serious? Is that really how it’s going down?]
[Damn, it’s not what I think it is, is it? This...]
[Hell, I'm done. So he never took her seriously at all? Sister, you can't let this slide. If you can tolerate this, it’s a tragedy for all women. Go over there right now and see what that scumbag is up to.]
[Yes, go get him!]
What started as a search for a missing boyfriend had taken a massive, unexpected turn. Such is the impermanence of life! The girl finally realized that if she let this slide, it wouldn't be in her character. She grabbed her phone and marched out, seething with rage. She needed closure, and she wanted to see just how low that scumbag could sink. She wasn't going to let this go.
"Streamer, will it be okay if I just go like this?"
[Go for it! We've got your back; we support you in spirit.]
[Yeah, don't be afraid. Call the police beforehand; it’ll be safer that way.]
The girl figured that was true, and besides, she was still live-streaming—what was there to fear? Jiang Rui sent her the room number in a private message. The girl smiled after reading it. "Go, it’ll be fine. I'm with you."
"Okay, streamer, I'll listen to you."
The girl felt as if she had been injected with adrenaline and stormed out.
[I have to say, this girl is brave. Nothing bad will happen, right?]
[Pfft, what could happen? She’s catching a cheater! The one who should be worried is that guy.]
[Folks, I’ve got my snacks and drinks ready. Sitting here waiting for the drama! Hahaha, one word: satisfying. Two words: very satisfying. Three words: absolutely satisfying!]
The girl arrived at the Xilaisun Hotel, entered, and took the elevator to the third floor. As she searched for room 318, she asked Jiang Rui, "Streamer, I suddenly feel nervous. What does that mean?"
Jiang Rui shook her head with a wry smile. "Don't overthink it; it's just your nerves. It’ll be fine. You're there."
The girl looked up and realized she had arrived. Just then, a food delivery worker walked out of room 318. The girl rushed over, looking pitiful. "Excuse me, sir, could you please knock on the door for me?"
The delivery worker looked her up and down. "What are you doing? Can't you knock yourself?"
"Sir, my boyfriend is in there. I'm here to catch him cheating. Could you please help me?"
Upon hearing this, the delivery worker instantly perked up, patted his chest, and replied readily, "Oh? Really? Leave it to me!"
It turned out that people who loved a good show were everywhere. The worker had two more deliveries to make, but he didn't want to leave anymore. He wanted to witness the scene—this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, after all.
*Knock, knock, knock.* A crisp sound echoed through the hallway.
"Who is it?" A displeased male voice came from inside, clearly annoyed at being interrupted.
The girl secretly pointed her phone camera at the receipt in the delivery worker's hand.
[Holy crap! Condoms! Size S! Hahaha... good work, sister!]
The girl didn't have time to look at the comments; all her attention was locked on room 318.
