Chapter Thirty-Six: Besieging the Grim Claw, The Clamor Returns
When the Deathclaw Wyvern appeared, Su Yi was at first startled, but after a brief reflection, he found it unsurprising. The unique environment and terrain of the Miasma Valley determined that most monsters here would not refuse leftovers or carrion. Each day, bodies fell from the Land Coral Plateau above, providing a buffet for the monsters of the valley. If the Great Jaws Wyvern knew of this corpse-drop site, there was no reason the Deathclaw Wyvern wouldn't as well.
Every corpse-drop site was a dining hall for the monsters, and those familiar with these places would come to try their luck. Clearly, this time, the Deathclaw Wyvern and Su Yi’s party had chosen the same site.
“This time is different from last! The advantage is mine! Great Jaws Wyvern, call reinforcements!” Su Yi shouted.
The Great Jaws Wyvern obviously bore enmity toward the Deathclaw Wyvern as well; it raised its head, vibrating the vocal folds on its neck, and let out a strange sound. Soon, shadows rustled and emerged all around—more than a dozen Great Jaws Wyverns arrived swiftly.
The Deathclaw Wyvern, sensing the overwhelming scents, began to grow restless and uneasy.
“Let’s make it even livelier! Dire Jackal Wyvern! Kestrel!” Su Yi released two of his companion beasts.
In an instant, three large monsters and a pack of smaller ones slowly encircled the Deathclaw Wyvern.
A cacophony of howls and screeches erupted, bombarding the corpse-drop site with noise. The Deathclaw Wyvern whipped its head left and right, its sharp claws twitching anxiously.
Su Yi loaded a heap of Fire Seed Stones into his launcher and watched the Deathclaw Wyvern’s movements calmly.
At last, hunger and agitation overcame the Deathclaw Wyvern's restraint—it let out a fierce roar and suddenly charged to break through at one point.
Su Yi, quick as lightning, fired the Fire Seed Stones.
Flames exploded immediately, startling the Deathclaw Wyvern and halting its advance.
At the moment the Deathclaw Wyvern grew desperate to escape, it revealed its fear. The surrounding Great Jaws Wyverns surged in, their paralyzing fangs bared for the attack.
The Deathclaw Wyvern roared in fury, its powerful body thrashing and hurling the Great Jaws Wyverns aside one by one, yet more continued to pounce.
With each bite, the paralytic venom of the Great Jaws Wyverns began to accumulate in the Deathclaw Wyvern’s body.
“Great Jaws Wyvern, use paralyzing venom!” Su Yi commanded.
The Great Jaws Wyvern lifted its head and spat a glob of yellow-green venom at the Deathclaw Wyvern.
At once, the venom seeped into the Deathclaw Wyvern’s skin, triggering all the built-up paralysis from the previous bites. The beast stiffened, electricity crackling over its body as it convulsed uncontrollably.
“Perfect opportunity! Dire Jackal Wyvern, Dragon Claw! Kestrel, Heavy Stone Smash!” Su Yi ordered his companions to swarm the subdued beast.
Watching the Deathclaw Wyvern beset—unable to resist—Su Yi’s mind surged with a bold idea.
Why not take this chance to tame the Deathclaw Wyvern?
But soon, the beast shook off the paralysis, roaring with rage. Its resilient body whipped like a lash, throwing off the monsters clinging to it.
“Hit it again! Paralyzing venom!”
The Great Jaws Wyvern prepared to repeat its attack, but the Deathclaw Wyvern was now furious. Tensing its muscular body, it sprang high into the air and launched itself ferociously at the Great Jaws Wyvern.
“So fast!” Su Yi saw the crimson blur flash past, and the Deathclaw Wyvern was already on the Great Jaws Wyvern, sinking its vicious fangs in. Its sharp canine teeth pierced flesh without resistance, wounding the already injured Great Jaws Wyvern anew.
The Great Jaws Wyvern howled in agony.
“Help it out!” Su Yi shouted.
Though the Deathclaw Wyvern seemed to be the weaker, besieged party, if it went wild and fiercely attacked one of the companion beasts, it truly had a chance to kill it quickly.
The Dire Jackal Wyvern and Kestrel immediately rushed to assist. The four monsters tangled together, the Deathclaw Wyvern darting and weaving among its opponents, claws slashing wildly.
“A tough nut to crack!” Su Yi frowned, swiftly strategizing a sure path to victory.
But the uproar of battle soon drew greater trouble.
A high-pitched roar sounded from above, wings beating the miasma into gusts that howled through the valley.
Su Yi looked up, cursing inwardly.
“Blazing Scale Wyvern!”
With a thunderous crash, the massive flying wyvern descended, scattering bones everywhere.
“Dire Jackal Wyvern, Great Jaws Wyvern, grab the Winddrift Wyvern’s corpse and retreat!” Su Yi switched the ammo in his launcher and commanded.
The two wyverns growled, each grabbing an end of the Winddrift Wyvern’s corpse, while Su Yi mounted the Kestrel, preparing to flee.
The Blazing Scale Wyvern immediately fixed its gaze on Su Yi and charged after them.
“That Blazing Scale Wyvern, meow, looks like the same one as last time! Look at that scar, meow!” Dewgrass cried.
Su Yi glanced back and saw the wyvern’s back bore a fierce, blackened slash across its copper-mirror scales.
Only a Dragon Slayer could inflict such a wound. Su Yi recalled that this Blazing Scale Wyvern had intervened in the battle between the Blackhorn Wyvern and the Dragon Slayer before. It was highly likely to be the same one.
“Damn! It’s like a ghost that won’t leave!” Su Yi immediately fired a flash bomb.
The explosion of light hit the charging Blazing Scale Wyvern, halting it as it squinted and shook its head in agitation.
Meanwhile, the Deathclaw Wyvern sniffed the air, grabbed a relatively intact corpse from the bone heap, and swiftly fled.
Deep within the valley, that terrifying roar echoed again, as if drawn by the commotion.
“Retreat!” Su Yi shouted, and his two wyverns ran desperately, dragging the Winddrift Wyvern’s corpse away.
After running hard for a long while, the two wyverns were panting, and Su Yi stopped, gasping for breath.
He looked around at a secluded little valley, finding no sign of monsters.
“Let’s quickly harvest the Winddrift Wyvern’s materials,” Su Yi said. Corpses couldn’t be placed in the inventory; they had to be broken down into materials first.
“Dire Jackal Wyvern, help me process this,” he ordered, directing the beast to perform the rough processing.
Once the corpse was separated into parts, Su Yi took his carving knife and, together with Dewgrass, began extracting materials.
Though the Winddrift Wyvern’s body had been badly damaged, its teeth and claws were fortunately intact.
Other parts like hide, scales, wing membranes, and bones could still be salvaged to some extent. Perhaps not enough to forge equipment for Su Yi, but certainly enough to outfit Dewgrass.
“So this is the Ice Sac,” Su Yi said, lifting a frost-white organ from the wyvern’s chest that resembled a viscera.
A cold liquid inside the Ice Sac made his hands numb, the surrounding moisture freezing into frost.
“Whew!” Su Yi quickly stowed the Ice Sac in his inventory and hugged a Firefly Bug for warmth until he recovered.
“Let’s hurry out of here,” he said, listening to the faint roars echoing from the depths of the Miasma Valley. He opened his map and made his way back toward the temporary camp.
Beside him, the Great Jaws Wyvern still tried to gnaw on the Winddrift Wyvern’s remains, prompting Su Yi to scold it for its lack of dignity.
