Chapter 142: The Operation (Part Two)
Jiang Huan ignored the man’s incessant muttering.
The strong—or rather, the mature—did not have time to complain and vent in the midst of adversity. They had to find a way out of it.
Sitting around waiting to die was not “lying flat” or being a “useless loafer.” It was simply passive resignation to death.
If you never exerted yourself, how would you know you could not stand back up?
Jiang Huan ate well and slept well. When the time came, she sharpened her resolve and approached Lu Pengchun, who was already glaring at her with undisguised hatred.
The next moment, Lu Pengchun’s vision went black, and he knew nothing more.
Half an hour later, three men in white were dumped into an alley. All of them were injured, and two could barely stand.
Yet when they landed and saw the marks carved into a conspicuous wall, they all turned their faces away in unspoken agreement. They pretended to roar angrily a few times, then received two punches and lowered their heads, not daring to move.
William, the blue-eyed man, actually arrived at the scene. He walked around with his hands on his hips. If the signal linked to his communicator had not shown that his target was somewhere nearby, he would have simply slaughtered the prisoners.
“Miss, surely it is time for you to show yourself. Keeping a gentleman waiting is hardly what a lady should do.”
Jiang Huan considered herself a lady, so she appeared before them, leading Lu Pengchun along.
Of course, she had no interest in holding hands with him.
She was holding a rope, which was tied around Lu Pengchun.
With a helmet on his head, Lu Pengchun occasionally cursed her as a madwoman.
William laughed loudly and opened his arms, as though he intended to walk over and embrace Jiang Huan. She drew her gun and aimed it at him.
“Sorry, but I’m allergic to the smell of scum. You’d better not come any closer. Let them leave first, and I’ll hand you the rope immediately. You’ll get what you want, and our deal will be complete.”
William froze for a second. He had not expected Jiang Huan to appear right under his nose and still act so arrogantly.
“Okay, okay. As you wish, madam.” He really did release the three men.
Perhaps to conserve resources, or perhaps because he was supremely confident, William had not planted any bombs on them. The three captives immediately left, as though they had just escaped from hell.
“Oh, your comrades ran awfully fast. They didn’t even stop to think about what would happen to you here.”
Jiang Huan glanced at the time on her communicator, gave him an eerie smile, and beckoned with one finger.
“Come over here. I’ll give you the rope.”
Though William was confident, he was not foolish enough to approach Jiang Huan when he had no idea how dangerous she might be. He mimicked her gesture and motioned for her to come to him.
In reality, he was using the gesture to order the snipers hidden nearby to aim at Jiang Huan’s forehead, while making absolutely sure they did not hit Lu Pengchun.
His project, if it advanced even one step further, would be an undertaking capable of shocking the entire world.
Jiang Huan nodded.
“Since you won’t come over, I’ll go to you.”
“Wait. Throw out your gun. And don’t go playing around with bombs.”
Jiang Huan did as he said and really threw away her weapon.
William felt victory was already in his grasp. He had even decided how he would torture her, and how he would send the footage to those people from her country.
Anyone who dared abduct someone from his territory and toy with him would have to pay the price.
With no weapon in sight, Jiang Huan raised both hands and approached one step at a time.
Suddenly, she cast a sharp glance toward a corner twenty meters away.
“This is rather unethical, isn’t it? You even arranged snipers?”
William paused.
“They are only there to ensure my safety. Don’t worry. Come on, give me the rope. Nothing will happen.”
Jiang Huan suddenly extended the rope toward him, moving cleanly and decisively without the slightest hesitation. Then her hand swept around behind her back and flung out a smoke grenade.
The moment it struck the ground, smoke billowed out and instantly swallowed the area, sealing off everyone’s vision.
Jiang Huan abandoned her position and immediately hurled a bundle of explosives toward the group. At the same time, she summoned a tank and climbed inside.
The thick steel plating completely blocked the barrage of gunfire. Once the explosives had finished detonating, Jiang Huan even fired the tank’s cannon directly at everything in front of her.
Boom, boom, crash, bang!
In an instant, sand and stones flew in every direction, and fragments filled the air.
Ha! She had always thought this thing would be useless even if she happened to draw it. Who would have thought it would finally come in handy?
Through the smoke, the tank appeared and caught the enemy completely off guard, blasting every last one of them to death.
When silence finally settled over the area, Jiang Huan emerged again with a helmet on her head. The ruins before her had been pulverized into rubble. Even a century-old wall-demolition crew could not have done a more professional job.
There was no longer a complete human shape to be seen on the ground. Jiang Huan searched the vicinity and found no survivors, but alarm bells continued to ring in the distance.
Those were the alarms she had scattered along the enemy’s inevitable route. Damn it. Every single one had been destroyed.
Jiang Huan immediately put away the tank and withdrew from the scene without hesitation, heading straight in a certain direction.
Not long afterward, she found her teammates. They were dragging the cursing, sobbing, laughing Lu Pengchun toward the submarine and shoving him inside.
Lu Pengchun was furious.
“I thought that female demon was a complete piece of trash, but she went alone to rescue you, and even made a dummy to stand in for me. If she’d been captured, they would have skinned her alive! And you? She rescued you, and you really intend to leave just like that?”
He had been the one cursing her most viciously before. But after seeing the three men return safely—and realizing that Jiang Huan had not handed him over to William—something in his mind had apparently undergone a dramatic transformation.
His selfishness vanished in an instant. He no longer called her a sanctimonious do-gooder. At that moment, the impression Jiang Huan had left on him was simply too profound—so profound that he could never forget it.
Damn it. Even if they had only managed to recover a scrap of her clothing, they could at least have built her a symbolic tomb.
That stupid woman—
“Why aren’t you moving? What’s taking so long? Is he refusing to cooperate again?”
Jiang Huan suddenly appeared beside them. With a sliding tackle, she came to a stop next to the submarine and helped everyone lift away the camouflage covering it.
“You—you, you, you—”
Before Lu Pengchun could finish, Jiang Huan struck him with the edge of her hand and knocked him unconscious. Only then did the group manage to get inside.
Jiang Huan ordered them to wait ten minutes. After ten minutes, two more team members arrived one after another. All of them had suffered serious injuries, but upon receiving Jiang Huan’s instructions, they had fought their way there with everything they had.
It turned out that Jiang Huan had carved five-pointed stars and the Monster Group’s unique code into every hidden corner.
All seven people were finally aboard the submarine. They had no time to dwell on the teammates who had been left behind forever in that mission. They submerged at once and set course along the retreat route.
The route they had used on the way in had already been abandoned. On the journey back, everyone inevitably asked Jiang Huan how she had escaped.
Jiang Huan said she had found several smoke grenades.
As she spoke, she even pulled out one of them. A string of English letters had been written across it in white marker, making it look unmistakably foreign.
Everyone fell silent, exchanging glances.
“Awesome.”
“I’m impressed.”
“No wonder they recruited you specially because of your luck.”
“Sis, from now on, you’re my goddess of fortune. I won’t worship Buddha or pray to immortals anymore—I’ll worship you instead. All the premium nutritional milk will go to you from now on.”
Jiang Huan felt nauseated.
No.
That really would not be necessary.
As Lu Pengchun slowly regained consciousness and listened to Jiang Huan’s exchanges with the others, he thought for a long time before reaching a conclusion.
Compared with Jiang Huan, he was the real idiot.
They suffered a crisis after running out of food for two days. Before they were completely exhausted, however, they reached the rendezvous point.
After climbing out of the submarine, none of them had the strength to do anything. They were all sent to the decontamination room and the treatment ward.
