"I'd like to invite you to a casual meal. I'll cook it myself!"
As soon as Tao Youfei uttered these words, the male students standing with pricked ears in the front rows let out a chorus of sighs. Liu Tong, in particular, felt his hatred for Yang Tang grow even deeper.
Yang Tang let out a dry, amused chuckle. "You're inviting me to dinner? And you're going to cook? Hehe."
Hearing what sounded like a hint of disdain in Yang Tang's laughter, Tao Youfei said somewhat unhappily, "Are you coming or not? You need to give me a definitive answer."
"Not going." Yang Tang shook his head decisively.
Tao Youfei asked reflexively, "Why?"
"What do you mean 'why'? Not going means not going. Is that clear enough for you now?" Yang Tang repeated himself, thinking to himself that if he were to eat a casual meal cooked by her, he might as well just cook something for himself!
Right at that moment, however, Yang Tang inadvertently caught sight of Liu Tong's venomous glare. He couldn't help but ponder to himself that this idea of an invitation to dinner wasn't actually bad. *Liu Tong, if you dare look at me like that again—look at me one more time and I'll poison you to death! I'll just use Kaiyou's culinary skills to whip up a few dishes, and everyone can eat them. The rest of them can have their toxins purified directly by the Fairy Tone, leaving only Liu Tong to die a slow death!*
Of course, Heaven loves all living things, so Yang Tang decided to give Liu Tong one more chance. As long as Liu Tong refrained from provoking him for the remainder of the semester, Yang Tang wouldn't mind letting him off the hook. Otherwise, Kaiyou's culinary masterpieces awaited him!
Having made up his mind, Yang Tang calmly averted his gaze from Liu Tong and stopped meeting his eyes.
Liu Tong assumed Yang Tang was afraid of him and let out a provocative smile. Unfortunately, Tao Youfei's attention was entirely focused on Yang Tang; she didn't even spare Liu Tong a sideways glance, causing him to waste his expression completely.
"Hey, Yang Tang, you said you wanted to sleep just now, right? Slap, slap—" Tao Youfei patted her own highly elastic thigh. "I'll allow you to rest your legs on mine!"
This remark caused yet another batch of male students in the front to nearly collapse in defeat.
Yang Tang replied, "We're not that close. Thanks!" With that, he simply leaned his head back against the seat and entered a state of quiet meditation with his eyes closed.
Seeing this, Tao Youfei was fuming with anger, yet she had no good way of dealing with him. She had to endure it all the way until they finally disembarked, at which point she began arguing with Yang Tang over who should leave the bus first.
Tao Youfei, who wanted to sneak a peek at the back of Yang Tang's neck, waited until the people in front had mostly cleared out. She made a polite gesturing motion toward Yang Tang and said with a radiant smile, "Student Yang, after you, please!"
Yang Tang remained unmoved. "It's always better to let ladies go first."
"Isn't it good of me to let you go first?"
"Not good. I have a habit of passing gas when I walk. What if I walk in front of you and my farts end up choking you out? I couldn't possibly bear that responsibility!" Yang Tang said sarcastically.
"It's fine, go ahead and fart all you want. I won't blame you!"
"But if you get overwhelmed by the stench, the school will blame me and probably give me a disciplinary demerit. Why would I put myself through that trouble?"
Hearing this, Tao Youfei was left completely speechless, unable to find any further excuse to refute Yang Tang. She had no choice but to obediently go first. Yang Tang followed right behind her, thoroughly enjoying the view of her graceful and slender figure.
After getting off the bus, Yang Tang, who still hadn't figured out why Tao Youfei had insisted on letting him go first, headed toward Building 33 on his own. Tao Youfei, lurking behind a group of female students, seized the opportunity to ambush him. Leaving her luggage right where it was on the spot, she dashed up right behind Yang Tang.
The surrounding female students couldn't help whispering among themselves upon seeing this.
"Seriously, I have no idea what Tao Youfei sees in Yang Tang. She's chasing after him so aggressively!"
"That just means you don't understand. Haven't you noticed that Yang Tang's facial features are arranged even more harmoniously than David Beckham's? It's just a pity that his bangs hang down past his cheekbones, so very few people manage to see his high-tier looks!"
"Then why aren't you chasing after Yang Tang?"
"Why would I chase him? Good-looking guys are always players."
"In my opinion, Tao Youfei isn't that shallow to chase someone purely based on looks. Actually, this Yang Tang was the top scorer in the liberal arts college entrance examination for the Mist City. The famous phrase 'A country is strong because its youth are strong' was written by him!"
"Oh my god, so it really was him!"
Halfway there, Tao Youfei finally closed the distance in three strides and blocked Yang Tang's path. "It really is you!"
Yang Tang asked in astonishment, "What really is me?"
"I remember the distance between your ears and the width of the back of your neck. What else do you have to say for yourself?"
"What do you expect me to say?" Yang Tang asked, completely baffled.
Tao Youfei stared him down fiercely. "You were the one who took down the wild man, and you were the one who carried me to the washroom, right?" Yang Tang froze for a second, desperately wanting to flat-out deny it, but he heard Tao Youfei continue, "I heard the Security Bureau is also investigating this matter. Does Student Yang think I should fulfill my duty as a good citizen and report this to them?"
Yang Tang rolled his eyes and curled his lip. "Then go ahead and report it. There's no proof or evidence for this kind of thing. What are you going to do, bite me?" Pausing for a moment, he added, "Besides, Student Tao, don't forget what our military training slogan is: lose skin, lose flesh, but never fall behind the formation. How can you possibly determine that the width of the back of my neck is identical to how it was over ten days ago?"
"This—" Tao Youfei hesitated for a moment, but quickly came up with a new tactic. "Yang Tang, if you want to prove it's not you, the only way is to give me a piggyback ride!"
Yang Tang glared at her. "Carry you on my back? Are you out of your mind? You've got limerence—and a severe case of it at that..."
"You—" Tao Youfei felt a surge of irritation, but she quickly reined in her temper and pouted. "Then I'll treat you to a meal. Surely you can do me that honor?"
"Dinner?" Yang Tang deliberately dragged out his voice to show hesitation. "Let's wait until after the National Day holiday to talk about it!"
"You said it yourself—after National Day, you're going to let me treat you to dinner. No backing out!" Tao Youfei locked him down to his words, and without waiting for him to say anything further, fluttered away like a butterfly.
It was worth mentioning that the National Day in this world was still on October 1st, but it was October 1, 1945—a full four years earlier than in his previous life.
Returning to Dormitory 303 to set down his luggage, Yang Tang called his parents to inform them that he wouldn't be returning home for the National Day holiday. Upon hearing this, his mother went on a long-winded lecture over the phone.
At noon, when the occupants of Dormitory 303 gathered for a meal, a single remark from the eldest member, Tan Yin, gave Yang Tang a jolt of realization. "Brothers, tonight is the Mid-Autumn Festival. How is everyone planning to spend it?"
Hearing this, Yang Tang spent the rest of the meal frowning. Because he didn't yet have a clear "desire of the heart," he feared he wouldn't be able to enter the dream state, which meant he was about to waste an opportunity.
Even after finishing their meal and exiting the cafeteria, Yang Tang was still brooding over the matter. Li Chong nudged him with his elbow. "Youngest, what are you daydreaming about? We're just pooling our money to buy mooncakes together. How about the two of us go play some basketball this afternoon, and then go buy the mooncakes afterward?"
Yang Tang shook his head. "I have some personal business to take care of, so I'll pass." With that, he pulled a hundred-bill from his pocket and slapped it into Li Chong's hand. "For the mooncakes!"
"Don't be like that, buddy. You don't have a date for tonight, do you?"
"No."
"Well, there you go." Despite being a sports major, Li Chong was full of sly ideas. "How about this? Don't rush off to your errands just yet. Do me a favor and come with me to the basketball court to check things out. If we're short on people, you can fill in as a substitute; if we have enough players, you can leave whenever you want. How's that?"
"Alright, fine!" Yang Tang reluctantly agreed to the arrangement.
As it approached two o'clock, Li Chong led Yang Tang on a detour to the Wumai Supermarket to buy some water, then headed straight toward the Sports and Health Center.
"Hey, Third, the Wusi Sports Field is over that way—"
Li Chong replied, "I arranged to meet some people at the courts near the Health Center."
"Damn, you planned this all along!"
"You can't really call it premeditation. On registration day, didn't you say you knew how to play basketball? I just wanted to let you show off your skills!"
Yang Tang: "..."
"Anyway, once we get to the court, if there are enough people, you don't have to play. Those guys are all sports majors, understand?"
Yang Tang nodded with a bitter smile.
By this time, the two of them had turned onto Jingyuan Road, where a vast open space on their right-hand side was entirely dedicated to tennis courts.
"Why are these tennis courts?"
"The basketball courts are a bit further ahead—"
*Whoosh!*
A tennis ball flew over the high net and happened to land right at Yang Tang's feet. He ignored it.
Shortly after, a tall, thin fellow inside the high net shouted at Yang Tang, "Hey, you there, help me pick up the ball!"
Yang Tang paid him no mind and continued unbothered toward the eastern end of Jingyuan Road. Li Chong even tossed the basketball in his hand and scoffed, "Don't you have legs? Come out and pick it up yourself!"
The tall, thin guy was choked with rage, nearly bursting into profanities on the spot. Finally, he just dropped a harsh threat: "We'll see about this!"
Sure enough, it wasn't over yet.
Just as Yang Tang and Li Chong reached the entrance of the Health Center, the same tall, thin guy caught up to them, accompanied by three other individuals. "You two, you're the ones who refused to pick up my ball just now, right?"
"It was us. What about it?" Relying on his tall and sturdy build, Li Chong wasn't the least bit intimidated.
The tall, thin guy sneered, "I haven't quite decided yet, but for starters, we're definitely going to teach you two a lesson!" As he spoke, his three companions swarmed in, completely blocking off Yang Tang and Li Chong.
Seeing this, Yang Tang let out a low bark, "Get lost!"
"Pipsqueak, who are you telling to get lost?" The fiercest-looking of the three swung a tennis racket down toward Yang Tang.
Without missing a beat, Yang Tang lashed out with a flying kick, snapping the racket clean in half. He sneered, "You guys know how to play a little tennis—what a big deal!" Just as the words left his mouth, a sudden flash of enlightenment struck him.
The desire of the heart: Tennis mastery!
*Damn it! Why on earth do I want to learn tennis again?* Yang Tang railed inwardly against the system, yet he had no choice but to accept this reality. The look he directed at the tall, thin guy and his crew turned decidedly unfriendly.
Originally, the Mid-Autumn Festival fell during the military training period, but things had been slightly delayed here to prevent any mishaps with entering the dream state.
