Chapter 112: Acting and Hindrance

Inside the car.

Bai Ze shao kept his eyes half-closed, and even the monkey driving the car dared not speak. The driving was noticeably gentler, as if afraid to disturb Bai Ze shao.

He had personally witnessed the confrontation with Tian Yaopeng just now. From his perspective, it was clear that Bai Ze shao had lost, and his mood must be sour. Now was not the time to provoke him.

Indeed, Bai Ze shao was in a foul mood, having been publicly humiliated by Tian Yaopeng. The fact that he refrained from drawing his gun on the spot was a mercy.

Undoubtedly, from this moment on, the two were at odds. But Bai Ze shao had intended to eliminate Tian Yaopeng anyway, so forming this enmity changed little.

Perhaps, this was exactly the outcome some wished to see.

There was a reason Bai Ze shao ultimately gave up on Li Huihui.

He had never quite been able to read this seemingly ordinary female student. During the recent march, she was a frail woman yet emerged unscathed, which was rather intriguing.

Now that Tian Yaopeng was fixated on Li Huihui, Bai Ze shao decided to go along with his plan and see if he could uncover anything.

Previously, Bai Ze shao had secretly investigated Li Huihui, but his efforts bore no fruit and met with unexplained obstruction.

He had intended to pursue the matter further but had been too occupied with missions lately.

As expected, Tian Yaopeng did not let Li Huihui go easily—or rather, he was targeting Bai Ze shao through her.

On the way, Tian Yaopeng instructed the driver to detour to the police station.

When Sun Yanjie’s car pulled into the station, he hadn’t even entered the office building when he noticed Tian Yaopeng’s car following closely behind. He didn’t rush inside but waited by the car door.

“Captain Sun, you’re waiting for me?” Tian Yaopeng said with a slight start, then smiled upon seeing Sun Yanjie.

“That’s right. But I’m not sure why Captain Tian is here at the police station. We just parted ways not long ago,” Sun Yanjie said, genuinely surprised and somewhat puzzled by Tian Yaopeng’s arrival.

“Sorry to trouble you, Captain Sun. Actually, I’m here on her behalf,” Tian Yaopeng said, gesturing toward the nearby police car.

Though Tian Yaopeng did not explicitly say it, Sun Yanjie immediately understood—he was here for Li Huihui.

Casting a meaningful glance at Tian Yaopeng, Sun Yanjie joked, “Captain Tian is quite dedicated, chasing her all the way to the police station.”

“No choice—it’s all for work,” Tian Yaopeng smiled and then fixed his gaze on Sun Yanjie, waiting for his response.

Sun Yanjie did not avoid Tian Yaopeng’s stare but looked at him with unspoken meaning and asked, “Are you sure you want to take Li Huihui away?”

“Captain Sun, according to protocol, our Special Operations Bureau has the right to prioritize the detention of suspects, especially those involved with the Red Party,” Tian Yaopeng clearly knew the implication behind Sun Yanjie’s words but feigned ignorance, citing regulations to pressure him.

“Very well, you do have that right. But some necessary handover procedures must be followed. I hope Captain Tian will cooperate,” Sun Yanjie said, having said all that was needed, then agreed without further delay.

“No problem. Procedures must be followed,” Tian Yaopeng nodded with a smile.

“Then let’s go to my office and wait. The paperwork can be handled by the subordinates. How about that?” Sun Yanjie said, leading the way to the office.

Sun Yanjie’s approach seemed a bit excessive but was understandable—after all, Tian Yaopeng had been quite disrespectful at the march’s assembly point.

“No need. I’d better keep an eye on things myself,” Tian Yaopeng said coldly, watching Sun Yanjie’s retreating figure.

“In that case, I won’t force you, Captain Tian,” Sun Yanjie said with a smile as he turned around.

Tian Yaopeng returned the smile.

After speaking, Sun Yanjie entered the office but, in a split second, gave a subtle signal to one of the officers inside.

That officer was Sun Yanjie’s trusted aide and immediately understood the message.

An hour later, Tian Yaopeng entered Sun Yanjie’s office with a dark expression. “Captain Sun, what exactly do you mean?”

“Captain Tian, it’s you. Why haven’t you left yet? Is there something else that needs handling? Tell me, I’m here to help. Come, have a seat,” Sun Yanjie said with a puzzled smile, standing up and approaching Tian Yaopeng.

Though fully aware that Sun Yanjie was playing coy, it was hard to be hostile here—after all, this was Sun Yanjie’s turf. Tian Yaopeng forced a bitter smile and said, “Captain Sun, I’m here regarding the handover paperwork. Your men’s efficiency is terrible.”

“The paperwork? You haven’t finished it yet?” Sun Yanjie feigned surprise, then grumbled, “Captain Tian, forgive me. It’s my fault—I’ve been too lenient with these brats. Please calm down.” He poured a cup of hot tea for Tian Yaopeng and continued, “Though, I must admit, my men can’t hold a candle to the Special Operations Bureau. Those are society’s elites—efficiency is frightening.”

“You flatter me, Director Sun,” Tian Yaopeng replied, enduring the sarcasm and putting on a polite facade. Even the fragrant tea now tasted bitter in his mouth.

“Don’t worry, Captain Tian. I’ll have the handover paperwork done immediately.” Sun Yanjie said this and picked up the phone on his desk.

Two minutes later.

A sharp-looking young officer entered Sun Yanjie’s office—the same one who had received the subtle signal earlier.

“Yes, Captain? Did you call me? Is there something you need?” the young officer asked, glancing at Tian Yaopeng with a smile.

“You punk, be serious. I want to know why the handover paperwork isn’t finished yet,” Sun Yanjie said sternly.

“Well, Captain, there were a lot of things that didn’t add up, so…” the young officer began.

“I don’t want excuses. Can you get it done within ten minutes, yes or no?” Sun Yanjie interrupted, turning his gaze to Tian Yaopeng.

The young officer seemed to steel himself, then replied painfully, “Yes, sir.”

“Since you said yes, then get moving! What are you standing around for? Get out of here!” Sun Yanjie scolded with a smile. He looked at Tian Yaopeng and said, “Captain Tian, see? I’m cleaning them up. Don’t worry, it’ll be done soon.”

“Thank you, Captain Sun,” Tian Yaopeng said, feeling a bit sick to his own stomach but forced a smile, playing along with the charade.

“You’re welcome, Captain Tian. Now, drink your tea before it gets cold, isn’t that right?” Sun Yanjie pushed the cup toward Tian Yaopeng with a smile.
