Chapter 122

The clash between the two sides was perilous at every turn. The slightest lapse in concentration could cost either of them his life.

Tian Yaopeng was at an even greater disadvantage because of his injured eye. His movements were inevitably affected, and before he knew it, several more wounds had appeared on his body.

What puzzled him was that the assassin had clearly gained the upper hand. In another few minutes, Tian Yaopeng would certainly be unable to hold out. Yet at that very moment, the assassin suddenly turned and fled, making straight for the door.

Although he could not understand what was happening, Tian Yaopeng nevertheless breathed a sigh of relief.

A minute or two later, he too emerged from the detention room and lowered his head to examine the guard lying on the floor.

The man was indeed completely dead. Tian Yaopeng could not help sighing inwardly. What a pity.

Just as he was about to rise, footsteps approached from a distance. The newcomer immediately saw the scene of Tian Yaopeng “killing” the guard.

He froze for a moment, then let out a shriek. Shouting loudly, he fired a warning shot and ran outside.

Tian Yaopeng did not pursue him. By then, how could he fail to realize that he had fallen into a carefully laid trap?

He still did not know who his opponent was, and there was no time to investigate. One thing, however, was certain: his enemy possessed tremendous influence and was terrifyingly powerful.

After all, killing someone inside the Special Intelligence Office and framing him for the crime was no simple matter. Clearly, there were people within the office cooperating with the enemy.

At that moment, Tian Yaopeng even began to suspect that his enemy might never have intended to kill him.

Otherwise, would it not have been far simpler to poison his food?

Since his opponent had gone to such lengths, there was no way he would be let off so easily. Tian Yaopeng no longer dared remain at the Special Intelligence Office. He had no idea who inside the organization was working against him.

After making a few quick preparations, he took advantage of the darkness and slipped away from the Special Intelligence Office before its people had time to react.

Once he had escaped, Tian Yaopeng hid in a temple south of Shanning. He remained there through the night, sleeping until a surge of pain jolted him awake.

He had not eaten, and his injuries left him exceedingly weak.

Struggling to his feet, he staggered back onto the streets of Shanning, where he immediately discovered that a wanted notice had been issued for him.

Tian Yaopeng was deeply shaken. Since when had the Special Intelligence Office become so efficient? His actions had certainly been serious, but in times like these, the death of one or two people was hardly considered a major matter.

The current outcome could only mean one thing: the person trying to bring him down was extraordinarily formidable.

The realization caused Tian Yaopeng’s heart to sink.

Suddenly, he spotted Bai Zeshao and the others not far away. He quickly slipped away.

On the street—

“Xiaobing, what are you doing out today as well?” Bai Zeshao asked curiously. He had not expected to run into Liu Xiaobing.

“My uncle saw that I had nothing to do and sent me out onto the streets.” As he spoke, Liu Xiaobing kept an eye on their surroundings.

“By the way, Xiaobai, have you found anything?”

“You know what Tian Yaopeng used to do. You could say he was our senior. His skills in reconnaissance and counter-surveillance are exceptional. A conspicuous search like this is completely useless.” Bai Zeshao shook his head with a smile.

“What about Li Huihui? Still no news?” Liu Xiaobing pressed.

Because of pressure from the Wen family, Li Huihui’s affair had already become the subject of heated discussion throughout the Special Intelligence Office. There were all kinds of versions circulating, which was why Liu Xiaobing had asked Bai Zeshao.

“Nothing.” Bai Zeshao shook his head and gave a bitter, helpless smile.

“By the way, Xiaobai, you personally experienced what happened with Li Huihui. What exactly happened in the interrogation room?” Liu Xiaobing pulled Bai Zeshao aside and whispered into his ear.

“Nothing happened,” Bai Zeshao replied directly.

“Xiaobai, we’re brothers. Don’t brush me off. Did anything really happen between you two, like people have been saying in private?” Liu Xiaobing asked anxiously.

“Xiaobing…” Bai Zeshao eyed him suspiciously, then said with an amused smile, “Don’t tell me the two of you are actually involved?”

“What nonsense are you talking about? I wish I were, but she looks down on me. The only time I asked her to see a movie, she did agree—but halfway through, she said she felt unwell, so she had to leave.” Liu Xiaobing sighed helplessly.

“Oh.” Bai Zeshao nodded. He suddenly remembered seeing Liu Xiaobing and Li Huihui chatting and laughing together on the street that day. The place had indeed been near the cinema.

Coming back to himself, Bai Zeshao was about to say something when he noticed Liu Xiaobing staring straight at him.

Feeling somewhat awkward, he touched his cheek and asked, “Why are you looking at me like that? Do I have a flower growing on my face?”

“Xiaobai, are you hiding something from me?” Liu Xiaobing stared at him solemnly, his tone heavy.

At the sight of Liu Xiaobing’s expression, Bai Zeshao’s heart gave a little jolt. Still, he did not think Liu Xiaobing had uncovered his secret, so he smiled and said, “No. Why are you being so serious?”

“Ah…” Liu Xiaobing’s expression immediately fell. “You have no idea. The only reason I managed to ask Li Huihui out that time was by using your name.”

“What? You chased after a girl and dragged me into it as well?” Bai Zeshao pretended to be displeased and punched Liu Xiaobing lightly on the shoulder.

“Aren’t we brothers? Besides, your name really carries weight. She agreed right away.” Liu Xiaobing spoke smugly.

“Then how did you explain my not showing up?” Since searching for Tian Yaopeng would not suffer from being delayed for a little while, Bai Zeshao simply found a place to sit down and asked curiously.

“Easy. I told her you had received a mission and had to leave at the last minute.” Liu Xiaobing explained it indifferently.

“You bastard,” Bai Zeshao swore.

“Seriously, you really aren’t hiding anything from me?”

“Here we go again. Don’t tell me you’re going to bring up Li Huihui again.” Bai Zeshao rolled his eyes helplessly.

“What do you think?” Liu Xiaobing said with a tragic look on his face. “You have no idea—during that date, nine out of every ten things we talked about were about you.”

“Serves you right. Who told you to ask that girl out in my name? Still, now that I think about it, you really are pathetic.” Bai Zeshao patted Liu Xiaobing on the shoulder with a grin.

“Get lost. Can’t you speak properly? What happened to all our years of friendship? Is our relationship just over like that?” Liu Xiaobing pushed Bai Zeshao’s arm away and cursed at him with a laugh.

“All right, enough. I don’t believe you’re really interested in her. Come on, let’s go find her. Who knows? You might even get the chance to play the hero and rescue the beauty.”

With that, Bai Zeshao rose and walked away.

Watching his retreating figure, Liu Xiaobing fell into deep thought. The smile on his face gradually disappeared.
