Taken with Her?

The next morning, Bai Zeshao and Liu Xiaobing appeared at Shanning Girls' School in full military dress, their sharp uniforms standing out with striking poise in the sunlight.

The two were so young-looking, yet already second lieutenants. That alone made them all the more eye-catching.

Standing at the school gate, they seemed like a pair of graceful figures in a moving landscape. Some of the bolder girls who passed by even threw flirtatious glances their way, leaving Bai Zeshao at a loss.

Fortunately, the person in charge from the school arrived before long and helped them out of the awkward situation.

Even so, their arrival still caused quite a stir at Shanning Girls' School.

In those days, girls who attended a school like this usually came from wealthy or powerful families, so the information they came into contact with in daily life was far richer than that of ordinary people.

Although Bai Zeshao and Liu Xiaobing were from the Secret Service, some of the girls still knew a few things about them.

Before long, the news of the two spread all over the school.

However, the instructors for this military training were not only Bai Zeshao and Liu Xiaobing; there were also ordinary soldiers from the army.

It was just that Bai Zeshao and Liu Xiaobing were the ones who drew the most attention.

Soon enough, the school had arranged everything. By the time Bai Zeshao and the others reached the spacious playground, the students were already all assembled.

Looking across the sea of young faces, Bai Zeshao could not help feeling a touch of emotion. Come to think of it, he was not much older than these girls, perhaps not older at all.

Yet unlike these carefree students, Bai Zeshao knew he would never again have the chance to enjoy such days.

Coming back to himself, Bai Zeshao turned his gaze to the students of Class 112, whom he would be training, and swept his eyes across the line one by one.

When his gaze reached the middle of the formation, he suddenly paused. He had not expected to see someone he knew here.

He even remembered her name: Li Huihui.

Li Huihui in the crowd also froze when she saw Bai Zeshao. Though she did not know his name, she remembered him vividly. The events in the restroom of the Rose Cabaret that night were still fresh in her mind.

That night, Bai Zeshao had been covered in wounds, while several corpses lay on the floor. Compared with the man before her now, he had looked ferocious then, yet there had also been something even more masculine about him.

"Instructor Bai, you sure are handsome," one of the bolder students said with a grin. "But how old are you?"

"We're about the same age. When we're off duty, you can call me Xiao Bai. All right, training starts now," Bai Zeshao said quickly when he saw the girls looking eager to try their luck.

For a group of girls with such open minds, he really did find them hard to deal with.

He glanced over at Liu Xiaobing, only to find that fellow already buried in a crowd of girls, laughing and chatting with them.

The training itself was simple, nothing more than formation drills and marching. But after just a little over an hour, someone was already shouting that they could not take it and wanted a rest. Bai Zeshao simply let everyone rest where they stood.

He still remembered Wu Zhengke's warning to him: just go through the motions. If he trained this group of delicate young ladies too hard, the one who would suffer in the end would be himself.

Still, not everyone was unable to endure it. Li Huihui was one of the best among them. It was clear that her physical condition was excellent.

Because of that, Bai Zeshao paid her a little more attention.

Before long, the whole morning had passed. While eating, Bai Zeshao glanced at the elated Liu Xiaobing and said, "Looks like the morning's training went well. You're getting along pretty well with the students."

"More or less. You know how it is with our line of work: getting sentimental is suicide. First, the rules don't allow it. Second, do you really think these young ladies would ever look twice at us?" Liu Xiaobing said with a casual grin.

"Fair enough." Bai Zeshao picked at his food and nodded in agreement.

"By the way, did you find anything?" Liu Xiaobing asked in a low voice, looking toward the students eating not far away.

"No. The Communists are good at seducing people's hearts. How could I possibly identify hidden Party members among the students after only one morning?" Bai Zeshao said helplessly.

So that was it. Bai Zeshao and Liu Xiaobing had come to the girls' school not only as instructors, but also on a mission: to find Communists hidden among the students.

"Never mind. They're only students who haven't seen much of the world. They aren't much of a threat. It would be best if we could find them, but if not, there's nothing we can do," Liu Xiaobing said with a smile.

"Right. We'll just do our best. I didn't spot any Communists, but some of the girls are quite good. We might consider developing them into our own people."

As he spoke, Bai Zeshao motioned toward Li Huihui. "That girl there is very good."

"She is indeed very good." Liu Xiaobing looked over and immediately brightened, nodding in strong agreement. Even the movement of his chopsticks paused.

"Hey, Xiaobing, do you have to be like that? At least mind your image now that you're an instructor. Besides, I was talking about her physical condition. What exactly are you thinking about?" Bai Zeshao said, rather speechlessly, at Liu Xiaobing's lecherous expression.

"All good, all good. By the way, what's her name?" Liu Xiaobing kept staring at Li Huihui as he asked Bai Zeshao.

"Li Huihui. What, have you really taken a fancy to her? Did you already forget what you just said? Getting involved emotionally is suicide."

"Ah." Liu Xiaobing sighed, withdrawing his gaze with some reluctance. "Must you say such mood-killing things?"

"You, I just don't believe you're really smitten with that girl," Bai Zeshao teased.

"Who knows," Liu Xiaobing muttered, lowering his head and resuming his meal.

Bai Zeshao shook his head, but in his heart he had indeed taken Li Huihui to heart. This girl was no ordinary one; not only was her physical condition excellent, her mental resilience was equally remarkable.

He just did not know whether such qualities had been forged later through training, or whether they were innate.

Coming back to himself, Bai Zeshao did not dwell on it further. After finishing their meal, he left the dining hall with Liu Xiaobing.
