In the midst of battle
For this grand campaign, it wasn’t just Mu Qingxi’s battle with English—there was also the struggle with physics, chemistry, and biology; none could be neglected.
Qin Yu, Xi Haifei, Xiao Gang, and Shen Bin took turns, each joining in the “game” with great enthusiasm.
At last, she put on a pitiful look and pleaded, “Dear mentors, aren’t you tired? Let’s take a break, shall we?”
But a “gentle” voice drifted over to her, “Mu Mu, don’t worry, your mentors aren’t tired yet.”
Wasn’t that just a roundabout way of saying there would be no break? Mu Qingxi recited silently in her heart. In truth, she couldn’t blame the four of them. After all, it was she, so clever all her life, who had made the most outrageous decision: to apprentice herself to four “master” teachers.
What luck!
Qin Yu, holding a set of test questions, said to her, “Mu Mu, you only got six out of ten on this English cloze test. That’s still not enough.”
She nodded. “Alright, I’ll study harder.”
Taking the questions she’d gotten wrong, Mu Qingxi mulled over the grammar, searching for where she’d made mistakes, marking them, and committing them to memory.
Xi Haifei was always the cool one—even his explanations carried that air. “Mu Mu, look, this step isn’t right. The object is at a quarter of the way in the magnetic field—here, the distribution of the magnetic field just transforms into an electric field. You’ve written this step wrong. Try again.”
She frowned, looking at the mistake Xi Haifei had pointed out. “Okay, I’ll do it again. Watch me, and if my logic is off, just let me know.”
Sitting beside Xi Haifei, she pulled out a sheet of paper and began to work through the problem anew. Whenever she went astray, Xi Haifei would explain patiently.
Absorbed in the problem, Mu Qingxi didn’t notice the happiness lighting up Xi Haifei’s face.
“Mu Mu, for this chemical reasoning problem, you can’t use this equation for the calculation—the results differ at high and normal temperatures. Take a look here, I’ve written it down for you. Compare them, and pay attention to the hidden temperature condition in the question before you try again.” Shen Bin, truly gentle, spoke in a voice even more pleasant than a girl’s. He was, after all, so bashful.
Fortunately, they’d known each other for a while now, and she often chatted with Shen Bin. Gradually, he was able to speak to her in full sentences, no longer blushing when conversing with her. Whether he still blushed when speaking to other girls was no longer her concern.
“Mu Mu, your biology this time is really good. Looks like you’ve been memorizing in earnest. Well done. This afternoon, I’ll find you another set of questions to try—they’ll be helpful.” Xiao Gang nodded with satisfaction.
At last, someone praised her. “Xiao Gang, I am a genius, after all! Haha.”
Finally, someone had something nice to say; otherwise, she might have lost all confidence. With four people taking turns pointing out her mistakes, even a saint would struggle, let alone someone as fragile as her.
Seven days passed. Mu Qingxi gradually increased her time studying English. Qin Yu said joyfully, “Mu Mu, this is wonderful! You managed to keep at it for a whole hour. The English exam won’t be such a problem now. If you keep this up, two hours won’t be an issue at all.”
She hadn’t expected herself to be so resilient, and decided to increase her study time by ten minutes each day. In a few days, she’d fully adjust. Now, being able to study English for an hour straight truly made her happy.
“Qin Yu, thank you. Thank you for helping me without reservation.” She watched as Qin Yu explained the grammar points, silently vowing in her heart that she would not let him down.
“Weiyu, you really are a spirit—willing to stay by my side, helping and encouraging me, giving me the courage to persist.” Yet her gratitude and emotion could only be expressed in silence.
“Mu Mu, spirits and elves are of the same kind—they need each other’s support. In this unfamiliar human world, only you and I are of the same kind. Only by supporting one another can we overcome all difficulties.”
