Chapter 47: Do Not Move
“Are you saying Chen Bo broke the law? I don’t believe it. He’s not that kind of person.”
Anyuan’s eyes flickered, hesitant to speak. Clearly, both he and Chen Bo were taken away, yet Anyuan was released unharmed while Chen Bo remained detained for questioning. This meant the matter was far from simple.
Lilian grasped Anyuan’s hand tightly, refusing to let go.
“Sweetheart, holding onto me won’t help. This isn’t my jurisdiction. I don’t want Chen Bo locked up either. But he crossed the line with his business dealings—that’s a fact he can’t deny. You probably don’t know, but I’m the largest shareholder of the Royal Wharf Nightclub. If the nightclub can’t operate, I suffer the biggest loss. Who do you think I should turn to for justice? If Chen Bo were out now, I’d drag him here and give him a good beating. He’s driven mad by greed, willing to do anything illegal. I entrusted him with the management, never asked him to break the law.”
Anyuan’s speech flowed smoothly, his tone rising and falling like a persuasive oration. Lilian was stunned, her aching stomach suddenly twisting with cramps, cold sweat beading on her forehead.
“You’re Chen Bo’s partner?”
“That’s right. I invested 3.9 million yuan; he only put in 1.1 million.”
Lilian’s brow furrowed slightly, sorrow washing over her delicate, pale face, which looked even more fragile under the night’s shadow. After speaking, she bit her moist lips hard, enduring the pain. To Anyuan, her lip-biting seemed almost seductive.
Determined not to release her hand, Anyuan added his other hand, clasping Lilian’s right hand firmly in his palm.
“Don’t worry. The truth will come out. If guilty, he’ll make amends; if innocent, it’ll be a lesson learned. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Someone must be holding a lever against him for a report to surface. After all, the nightclub business always stirs the imagination. Even I felt some of the service procedures he set up had gone astray…”
As he spoke, Anyuan noticed Lilian beginning to slump downward. He quickly caught her.
“I can’t take it anymore, I have to go to the hospital.”
Feeling the pain exceeding her endurance, her body curling into a ball couldn’t fend off the overwhelming agony crashing over her. After speaking, her vision blackened, and she collapsed toward the floor…
The bright white lights before her eyes were dazzling yet seemed to obscure all sight, while faint whispers drifted to her ears.
Her body felt relaxed, as if lying in a warm bed of cotton.
She tried to lift her hand but found it grasped tightly. Perhaps from holding so long, it felt numb.
“Sweetheart, are you feeling better?”
Anyuan’s voice! So the hand was still held by him.
She tried to pull away, but her arm had no strength.
“Don’t move around. If you need anything, your lover can help you get it.”
---
“No problem now. Be careful not to let pregnant women get emotionally agitated—very dangerous. Luckily, you arrived just in time.”
The authoritative voice was clearly a doctor’s warning.
Lilian dared not move, but the images before her eyes sharpened, and her mind, as if cleansed and cleared, became exceptionally lucid.
She was still pregnant!
Thinking to check her belly, strength returned to her hands, slipping away from Anyuan’s grasp like an eel. She placed both hands on her swollen abdomen, unsure whether to feel joy or sorrow. If only she had given birth in her unconscious state earlier—how much mental torment could have been spared, how many unwanted sensations and memories avoided.
Sighing softly, she turned to see Anyuan’s face.
He smiled gently at her.
“You know? You really scared me just now.”
Anyuan’s voice instantly intoxicated Lilian again.
She liked that voice. If she closed her eyes and ignored his face, it was as if she were back in the tender moments when Chen Hao’an cared for her during her illness.
“Are you feeling unwell again?”
Seeing Lilian close her eyes, Anyuan grew nervous, rising from the bedside to lean over and study her face.
Under the gaze of a not-quite-familiar man, she dared not indulge in those romantic memories.
Lilian opened her eyes, immediately turning her face aside. “I’m fine. I think I can go home now. I’ll see someone tomorrow. Chen Bo won’t be in trouble.”
She forced herself to sit up. At first, Anyuan hesitated, feeling awkward to support her. Seeing her weak and unsteady, he quickly placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Sweetheart, don’t worry about Chen Bo anymore. Trust that the law won’t wrong him; he’ll get what he deserves. You should think more about yourself. Look at you now—working, carrying a child—and how much can he really take care of you?”
“We’re fine. I don’t think he owes me anything,” Lilian replied.
Anyuan’s words clearly aimed to sow discord. Even if there were grievances with Chen Bo, there was no need to let outsiders know—especially when that outsider was Anyuan, whose allegiance was unclear.
Lilian added, “He treats me well. I’m satisfied. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be having another child with him.”
---
“Oh? How well do you know him? From what I know, you married, divorced, and remarried not long ago. I suppose this child wasn’t exactly planned.”
Anyuan seemed to see through everything, his gaze sliding from Lilian’s face to her rounded belly, then smiling again at her.
Just looking at her face, he felt he might fall under her spell.
The first time he saw Lilian in an elevator in Luo City, he was struck by love at first sight. But he knew he couldn’t fall for any woman, much less be moved by love.
Later, learning that Lilian was Chen Bo’s special assistant—the word “special” conjured all sorts of fantasies—only made the woman who longed for Chen Bo grit her teeth in jealousy.
After all his scheming, he felt ready to withdraw and pursue what he truly wanted…
“Seems like you know us quite well?”
Lilian leaned back against the headboard and naturally shrugged off Anyuan’s hand from her shoulder. She lifted her chin and regarded him with a scrutinizing gaze.
Anyuan had taken her to the hospital, a favor she did not wish to repay with harsh words. Otherwise, if anyone else had said such things, she would have snapped back fiercely. Only she truly knew the state of her marriage; no one else had the right to judge.
“You should rest now. You’ve just passed the danger zone and can’t move around recklessly. I can stay with you, but I have business tomorrow and must leave Dongling City. Your family should be able to take care of you, right?”
Mentioning family, Lilian could only smile bitterly. Her mother only thought of her when causing trouble or asking for money—she wouldn’t come to care for her.
“You don’t have to stay. I’m fine on my own. You should get some rest. You’ve been locked up all day and must be exhausted. Find a hotel, wash up, and get some sleep.”
“If that’s what you want, then I’ll go.”
“Go ahead.”
She was in a single room, yet having a grown man stay as a bedside companion felt inappropriate. Anyuan was just a client, at most a partner of Chen Bo’s.
Anyuan no longer hesitated. At the door, he turned back and smiled at Lilian.
“I’m leaving now. Take good care of yourself.”
