Chapter 91: Adding Fuel to the Fire

At Listening to the Wind Pavilion, Feng Jinye heard Weishao Qianyu’s soft voice upon arrival. He brushed the dust from his clothes and carefully placed Rui’er back in the tree...
Weishao Qianyu frowned, puzzled as to why Feng Jinye always put Rui’er up in the tree.
“Why do you always put Rui’er up in the tree?” she asked.
“He’s noisy,” Feng Jinye replied.
“How can that be? Rui’er is very obedient. That day in the eastern part of the city, he followed us quietly without saying a word!” Weishao Qianyu admired Rui’er deeply.
“He’s not well-behaved,” Feng Jinye countered.
“Nonsense, he’s clearly obedient!” Weishao Qianyu shot Feng Jinye a sharp glance.
From the tree, Rui’er shouted loudly, “Rui’er is very obedient! Very good!”
Feng Jinye frowned; he thought Rui’er was undeniably noisy.
Weishao Qianyu approached the tree and said, “Rui’er, come down. Auntie will catch you, okay?”
“No! No! Rui’er is heavy; Auntie can’t catch him. Only Uncle can catch him!” Rui’er continued shouting from the tree.
His little head still recalled the image of Weishao Qianyu injured and sitting in a wheelchair last time, and these past days, many had told him that Auntie’s hand was hurt and she couldn’t hold him anymore…
Weishao Qianyu pouted. Was this boy foolish? Always bullied but still clinging on?
She turned to Feng Jinye, signaling him to take the little brat down.
Feng Jinye’s face darkened; he climbed the tree and grabbed Rui’er down directly.
Inside the courtyard pavilion, Qingxia had laid out a table of small pastries. Weishao Qianyu took Rui’er’s hand and led him over for a snack.
Feng Jinye’s brow furrowed tighter and tighter...
Suddenly, he understood why, when he was a child, his father always placed him in trees while holding Xuanying and his mother below, chatting leisurely over tea...
His father once told him that boys needed more exercise, and being in trees would awaken his desire to learn lightness skills so he could soon leap over rooftops.
Feng Jinye regretted how he had ever believed that as a child.
He stepped toward the pavilion, stood between Weishao Qianyu and Rui’er. Rui’er was indeed sensible; he quickly jumped down from the stool, gave up his seat to Feng Jinye, and climbed onto another stone bench.
Feng Jinye spoke calmly, “How long does this brat have to stay at the prince’s mansion?”
Weishao Qianyu was momentarily stunned, but before she could answer, Rui’er said, “For a long time...”
Feng Jinye stared at him and asked, “Are you obedient?”
Rui’er nodded constantly. Feng Jinye then said sternly, “Sit properly. Don’t speak.”
Rui’er immediately sat upright and fell silent. Weishao Qianyu watched, amused.
Soon Rui’er finished the pastry in his hand. Qingxia was about to offer another piece, but Feng Jinye’s sharp look stopped her. Rui’er reached out to take one.
Feng Jinye’s voice floated softly, “Are you very good?”
Rui’er looked puzzled but still nodded.
“Sit still. Don’t fidget!” Feng Jinye ordered.
Weishao Qianyu gasped, “This is... too harsh on a child.”
When Lu Yanran approached, she saw her son sitting expressionless beside Feng Jinye, a frightening sight.
She called softly from behind, “Rui’er... Rui’er...,” but Rui’er neither moved nor responded.
Lu Yanran hurried forward and picked him up. Rui’er immediately burst into tears.
Feng Jinye frowned. He really was noisy!
“It’s all Mother’s fault... all Mother’s fault!” Rui’er kept blaming loudly.

Lu Yanran was baffled. Weishao Qianyu wanted to laugh but held back since the child was crying. She leaned against Feng Jinye’s shoulder, trembling slightly as she stifled her laughter.
Feng Jinye’s expression finally cleared.
Rui’er was soon coaxed by Lu Yanran. He then noticed Weishao Qianyu, who seemed caught between laughing and crying: “Auntie, what’s wrong?”
“She was so upset she cried. She said you’re obedient and good, but you’re not. You didn’t sit still for long before fidgeting!” Feng Jinye said.
Lu Yanran’s expression froze.
Feng Jinye glanced at Lu Yanran sharply.
A chill ran through her body.
Feng Jinye’s heart and eyes held only Weishao Qianyu; he never wasted emotion or expression on anyone else.
Why did he glance at her? Could it be because she had taken the position of the prince’s consort? Or because she had thrown darts at Weishao Qianyu?
Weishao Qianyu raised her head, sensing the atmosphere was off.
Clearly something was wrong. She signaled Qingxia, who immediately took Rui’er from Lu Yanran’s arms and stepped back.
Since the incident in the eastern city, rumors spread that Rui’er was Feng Jinye’s son. Qingxia held Rui’er, studying him carefully, thinking he resembled the War Prince more and more.
Weishao Qianyu poked Feng Jinye’s waist. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Feng Jinye said, taking her hand as he sat.
Lu Yanran had abandoned her former meekness, now cold and unyielding, no longer hiding her assassin past.
Ignoring Feng Jinye’s hostility, she said to Weishao Qianyu, “I heard you talking with Dongnuan about the courtesan Mei Ji. If you find her, I have a way!”
Weishao Qianyu looked up at Lu Yanran. “You should stay home and raise your child. Just be the meek Lu Yanran again.”
Lu Yanran was speechless. Weishao Qianyu was utterly detestable.
“My grandfather wants me to return to Guanlin City with my elder brother. He told me to tell you to come home today!” Lu Yanran finished and turned to leave.
Weishao Qianyu asked, “You’re not going to Guanlin City?”
“No!” Lu Yanran answered firmly.
“Oh.” Weishao Qianyu said bluntly, “The War Prince’s mansion does not keep idlers. If you don’t go, don’t expect to stay in my home!”
Weishao Qianyu actually hoped Lu Yanran would take Rui’er to Guanlin City; there was no need for him to stay in the capital and face endless risks with her.
“Don’t flatter yourself. I’m staying to find my son a proper family name! Rui’er is not Lin Yichu’s son!” Lu Yanran said seriously.
Weishao Qianyu was stunned. Rui’er wasn’t Lin Yichu’s son? No wonder Lin Yichu could be so ruthless and abandon him without hesitation. Isn’t it said that even a tiger won’t eat its own cub?
“You...” Weishao Qianyu couldn’t say more. She couldn’t imagine what Lu Yanran had endured all these years.
Feng Jinye was also shocked. Looking at Rui’er, he felt he had seen him somewhere before...
Suddenly, Weishao Qianyu’s mind raced, recalling recent rumors in the capital, Feng Jinye’s interactions with Rui’er, and the strange atmosphere when Feng Jinye saw Lu Yanran earlier...
Could it be...
Her complexion turned pale and then flushed repeatedly.
“No... no...” she murmured.
If that were true, Feng Jinye wouldn’t behave this way. But... Feng Jinye had amnesia... could his memory not have returned?
Considering Lu Yanran’s pregnancy timeline—it was shortly after Feng Jinye’s expedition...
The timing matched perfectly.
Feng Jinye gently patted Weishao Qianyu’s head. She snapped back to reality, almost frightened by her own wild thoughts.
“What are you thinking about?” Feng Jinye asked.
Page 3/3
Weishao Qianyu stared blankly. “Why does Rui’er have the surname Feng?”
Lu Yanran, rarely seeing Weishao Qianyu at a loss, smiled triumphantly and turned to leave.
Feng Jinye paused, about to reply, but Weishao Qianyu added, “Wait, is Rui’er’s surname really Feng?”
“What do you mean by that?” Feng Jinye was puzzled.
Weishao Qianyu thought hard, “Well... you saw how determined Lu Yanran was when she came to the War Prince’s mansion to challenge for the position of consort a few years ago. It’s entirely possible...”
She hesitated, then finished with the last four words: “...that she climbed into your bed.”
The entire Listening to the Wind Pavilion fell into silence.
At lunchtime, Lu Yanran returned to the Duke’s Mansion with Rui’er. The family was dining together.
Lu Liyuan frowned and asked, “Why didn’t Qianyu come back with you?”
“She... suspects the War Prince has another woman outside. The couple had a fight!”
Lu Yanran had just picked up Rui’er and hadn’t sat down when she heard four loud bangs—four people angrily put down their chopsticks one after another.
“I’ll go fetch Qianyu and bring her back to Guanlin City!” Lu Liyuan said angrily.
“Yes!” Duke Lu nodded.
“Yes!” Lu Qin, the heir, agreed.
“Our Lu family’s legitimate daughter is not to be trifled with!” Madam Lu raised both hands in support.
Lu Yanran suddenly felt things had escalated, but also enjoyed the spectacle.
Feng Jinye was angry.
Weishao Qianyu, inexplicably, was also upset—such a big matter, and he didn’t comfort her at all...
When emotions run high, wild thoughts follow. The more she thought about Feng Jinye’s reaction before departing for the Western Campaign, the more it seemed off...
Besides, Lu Yanran already had a son. Why had she been so bold to come and compete for the War Prince’s consort position?
Soon, Lu Liyuan arrived at the War Prince’s mansion, heading straight for the Pavilion of Words.
“Qianyu, your brother is here to take you home for lunch. Grandfather is waiting!” Lu Liyuan said.
Weishao Qianyu suddenly remembered Lu Yanran saying that her grandfather wanted her to return to the Duke’s Mansion.
“Alright.” Weishao Qianyu stopped speculating wildly, tidied herself, and went back to the Duke’s Mansion with Lu Liyuan.
When Chu Jiu reported Lu Liyuan’s arrival to Feng Jinye, he only responded indifferently.
At dusk, Feng Jinye found himself unexpectedly missing Weishao Qianyu.
“Where is the consort?” Feng Jinye asked Chu Jiu.
“Sir, the consort went with General Lu to the Duke’s Mansion for lunch and hasn’t returned yet,” Chu Jiu replied.
Feng Jinye frowned and said, “From now on...”
He wanted to forbid the Lu family from coming and going freely in the War Prince’s mansion but only said two words before trailing off.
Inside the Duke’s Mansion, Lu Yanran was surprised to see Lu Liyuan bring Weishao Qianyu back alone. Had they truly fallen out?
Weishao Qianyu acted as if nothing had happened and quietly ate her meal. Fighting and sulking had delayed lunchtime, and she was quite hungry.
When Duke Lu mentioned returning to Guanlin City, Weishao Qianyu nodded repeatedly in agreement. Too many matters in the capital were as unpredictable as the wind and rain!
